From the NY Times Book of House Plants (p.121), regarding kalanchoe:

Keep them in a cool place but in full sunlight. Too little light causes
ungainly growth. Use a sandy soil mix and water thoroughly. Allow to dry out
between waterings. Plants bloom in December if the length of their day
is shortened in September by giving them complete darkness from 6:00PM
to 7:00AM.

It sounds like mid autumn is too early to expect anything, and patience is
in order. (Why can't books agree on stuff like this?)

Mine's in full bud, partial bloom right now. The only special care I give
it is remembering to water it once in a while. B-)

You could really confuse them by putting them (it) in a box for the hrs
needed. You could have blooms by the end of March!
