Steffi says that she has used Burpee and has always been pleased with
the results. She has heard of Thompson and Morgan. She says they have
an excellent reputation and that they specialize more in out-of-the-ordinary
stuff than Burpee does. This probably explains the extensive catalog.
Steffi has never used them, but I think she plans to call the 1-800
number you posted, so as to get a catalog for herself.

The Thompson and Morgan Catalog arrived.
It is 208 pages long, and each page is packed.
There is a "$2.50 off any order of $20 or more" sticker on the cover, too.
Steffi looked at the catalog briefly and said it was very interesting.
She's really glad she decided to order it.

I received the Nichols Garden Nursery cataloge the other day only 4 days after
faxing a request. (503) 967-8406. Lots of herbs, flowers (some strange ones),
herbal tea mixtures, Baker's yeast, and a few tools. Prices usually include
shipping, making them quite reasonable. I'll prob order some things from them,
but will wait for the rest of the catalogs to arrive!

I've ordered twice from Michigan Bulb and both times received something
other than what I ordered. One was a really spectacular tulip in their
book that turned out tiny and pathetic. The other was supposed to be
an ornamental strawberry hanging basket that turned out to be three
regular strawberry plants (of the fruited variety). I won't order
from them again.

I got a catalog from Richters Goodwood, Ontario, Canada LOC 1AO
They carry probably the biggest selection of herb seeds, plugs, plants, etc.
Being from Canada, they can make all kinds of health claims an American
company could not! Great catalog, cost a coupla dollars. More info from:
info@richters.com
They do ship to the U.S. from a distributer on the East coast, so there is
no border hassel.

I'm looking at buying a house, and seeing a seed catalog at my Dad's house
got all excited about the idea of gardening.

I have ordered from Michigan Bulb Company for years and always had good luck
with them. Their plants have always arrived in good condition and they do
stand behind their stuff. I have only had trouble growing one or two of their
things and they issued me credits or new plants immediately.

Wow, I am even now sitting in my living room looking out at the wonderful
tulips which I got, left sitting around for about 3 months, then planted from
Michigan bulb. I have previously had plants like carnations and wisteria from
them that has done really well. Not to mention all kinds of bulbs. Maybe
they don't pay as much attention to their local people at to those far away.
I have also always found them to be very courteous when I have had a problem.
I have usually ordered most of my rose bushes from them and, unfortunately,
I had to leave all those behind when I moved, they have done wonderfully and
lasted for years and years. I have some rose bushes at the other house (we
are trying to sell) that are 11 years old and still bloom profusely and smell
wonderfully. Lincoln, Peace, Tropicana, and John F. Kennedy roses are the
ones that smell the best. And, they are all different colors and scents.
They are heavenly. Unfortunately, the deer eat my rose bushes here, so until
I can get a fence, I won't be able to enjoy them again.
Sorry about your bad luck. You ought to call and complain some more.
Personally, I am very persistent when it comes to not being happy with a
catalog purchase or any other purchase for that matter. I work hard for my
money and refuse to settle for inferior goods. I also think that most people
are like this. But I may be niave (sp) or just a bitch in their opinion.
I recently got my whole amount of money back from the U-haul company after
this move. It was well over $400. And that was after using two of their
trucks (the 17' and the 14') to move most of my stuff to west virginia. The
first truck broke down on me and left me stranded for mor than 9 hours on the
side of a not well patrolled highway. The second truck was too small to fit
all of my stuff. I called the toll free number and complained. Within in
a month, I had a check for the entire amount of my expenditure back in my
hands. Like I said, maybe I am just a bitch...but a sweet talking one?

I ordered my first ever seed catalogs this year, and spent hours
perusing them when they arrived in January. I was especially taken
with the Cook's Garden Seeds catalog, and Shepherd's Garden Seeds.
I made substantial orders from both. I still plan to order a few
more veggies from Jonny's (sp?) Selected Seeds, and probably some
flower seeds from Burpee. All catalog spellings approximate, ad
the catalogs are downstairs right now. I can post phone numbers
if anyone wants them.
I'm also really fond of the Gardener's Supply Catalog. I ordered
some of their lucite sun shelves that attach to windows with
suction cups, and they're working out really well. And the
order takers on the phone both times I called were experienced
and enthusiastic gardeners, fun to talk to.

I just got my Seed Savers 1998 Catalog. It costs $25/year to be a member,
which then entitles you to four issues a year, one being the catalog, which
this year is about 500 pages long, with about 20-30 different varieties of
vegetable on each page, all offered by other amateur gardeners, at $1/packet
(or $2 if you are not also offering, or a bit more for larger seeds and
plants). Every time I send things I always send a few extra varieties, and
I got a whole bunch of interesting things from Australia. I would be willing
to order a couple of vegetable varieties for anyone wishing to try this out,
at my member rate, if they would promise to join if they like it. THere are
enormous numbers of peppers and potatoes, also 48 different fava beans, 10
kinds of flax (oil or fiber), etc. 6 pages of garlic. I have succeededin
growing azuki beans this far north, also cowpeas, and some Nigerian leaf
amaranth (free seeds to all, I got lots). The organization is a non-profit
which is attempting to keep varieties from going extinct, and also funds
expeditions to the former Soviet Union.
