Exchange Traded Funds Mark Unseen   Feb 20 17:29 UTC 2004

This is the Exchange Traded Funds item.

With all the bad publicity mutual funds have gotten over this past
year, it seems like ETFs have become more popular.

I've heard that most mutual funds can't beat the S&P 500 over the
long run....I don't know if thats a myth or not.

Probably one of the more interesting ETF's is a proposed gold fund
(GLD) that will be based on the price of 1/10th an ounce of gold.

anyways, are there any ETF's that you like?

My impression is that the type of mutual funds that have received bad
publicity and the type of mutual funds that are similar to ETFs are
fairly different.

For the typical long-term investor, I don't really see the advantage of
ETFs, which seem more geared to traders.

A curious analysis of them may be useful as a data point:

Briefly, it says they suck.
