COME TO ALASKA OR THE WOLF GETS IT!!!!!

Nov 23 04:42 UTC 1994 |
I have a rather disturbing piece of news that I read in
the latest issue of 'Shaman's Drum'.
In Alaska, The government Okayed the killing of 500,000 Wolves
because of the wolves eating sheep and livestock. They also okayed
that they could be hunted by air. SO, They finally agree to the preservation
of the wolves and make a hunting law on them (except natives) and now
tehy want us to kill them. Give me your opinions.

This is indeed disturbing news, Laughing Bear. As a biologist I cannot see
any form of logic in killing the wolves unless they are overpopulated (I'm
unsure as to the statistics of the wolf populations in Alaska).
I personally think that killing wolves is not the way to solve the problem
of livestock and sheep depletion.

As a great wolf lover, I see this as a horrible thing for a Federal law to be
passed allowing wolves to be hunted. Unknown to many of those that know me
personally, I carry a long line of Indian Blood in my viens. I take pride in
my pas I feel that the Government has lied far to much to us in the past. Now
we have been told another lie, that the endangered spiecies of the wolves are
to be protected. Ranchers need other ways to protect their livestock. Yet the
wolf is a natural predator and it is not logical to wipe another spiecies out
for modern convience. The Wolf may be killed, but those taht love and admire
them will carry their spirit on.

Which federal orgization is funding this?
Give me a couple days i'll see if i can get more info. But i think the
killing of wolves in Alaska is underway and going strong at this minute.

I have some good news on the wolf shoot in Alaska. Because of the public
out cry onthe subject the project has been indefinately suspended.
1200 wolves were shot, however, before the project was suspended

Great news. That "hunt" (HA!) was started to draw tourist dollars,
though they had some lame rationalization - increasing the caribou
herd (to draw tourist hunter dollars)?
