Caffeine soda pop and all its new permutations. Mark Unseen   Sep 18 09:38 UTC 2002

Cola digs:
Coke- vile and nasty. How in the world can anyone drink that stuff?

Pepsi- better. Do not drink warm and flat. I can drink other warm
flat pop, but this warm and flat.. eewww

Dr. Pepper- this is the preferred "cola" choice. I care not that it is
supposedly prune juice at its base.

RC Cola- is this around anymore? People liked this when Coke II came
out.

What is green:
Mountain Dew- ah, the great green stuff. "Mountain Spew"? "Horse
piss"? Shit, I don't care, I'm drinking it. Do the Dew.

Surge- looks like Dew, but doesn't taste like Dew. Why is everyone so
surprised? I regard it as a separate drink, and I still like it. Hard
to find now, though.

Mello Yello- this is similar, but this ain't Dew, either. Why was
there no equivalent of the "Pepsi Challenge" for the green drinks?

When soda goes cherry or makes a funky other color:
Cherry Coke- cherry makes it somehow palatable.

Dr. Pepper Red Fusion- Funky, but we're getting into Kool-Aid almost.

Mt. Dew Code Red- Hey man, I dig.

Pepsi Blue- like drinking an Otter pop. Actually, I can see why
beeswing likened it to a mixed drink-- just add the vodka, and.. no,
wait. I had to lay off the sauce. Don't do that anymore.

Pepsi Clear- see below.

What the hell? This does/did have caffeine? or, what were they
thinking?:
Sunkist- hard to believe, hmmm?

Squirt Ruby Red- So Texas has *that* kind of spike.

Barq's- does it, or doesn't it? It *does* supposedly have bite.

7up Gold- Remember this? When "crisp and clean" decided to try
caffeine.

Pepsi Clear- mmmm, sugar water! Seriously, I don't actually remember
trying this. Supposedly, no caffeine.

Concepts that just didn't make it:

Coke II- never tried it, so I don't remember. But I thought people
would be glad. I told you, Coke is disgusting.

Pepsi Free- Slick logo design, but that was about it. So Pepsi Co.
just gold colors the caffeine free ones now.

Jolt- Hung on for a while, but so gross I'm glad it's dead.

Things that just *need* to die:

Pepsi Twist- ugh, fake lemon! Yuck, yuck, yuck! If diet Coke drinkers
were squeezing lemons in their soda, it should have stayed there.

Diet Coke with lemon: Coke is vile and disgusting. Diet Coke-- even
worse. With fake lemon? Blech!

Green, and purple ketchup. Oh, wait, no one drinks that, but it still
needs to die. Chocolate fries and whatever else, that too. *sigh*
Weird kids.

I was on a Ginger Beer kick for a while. This is Ginger Ale, with the Ginger
cranked up so high that you want to grab a drink after drinking it to cool
down your mouth. However, good ginger beer is hard to find. The most common
brands are only slightly tougher than ginger ale. No fun. But ginger beer
is expensive and hard to find, so I gave it up.

I once saw an old Dr Pepper ad that suggested that Dr Pepper was a year round
drink - in hot weather, drink it cold, in cold weather, drink it hot. OK,
so I nuked some in the microwave. Tastes like oversweet tea. If I want
oversweet tea, I get some tea and oversweeten it.

Don't forget (I almost did):

Vanilla Coke: Ewww! My curiosity has been punished. See Pepsi and
Coke with lemon (e.g. Twist). Better if you just make a Coke ice cream
float. I hear Cherry Coke is better when you have the soda jerk do
real cherry syrup.

Shasta, Faygo, Safeway Select, other cheap underdog colas: all yuck.

nuke Dr. Pepper?!? Ugh, ugh, ugh!

Ginger beer... hmmm.. must be an older thing. Reminds me of how beer
snobs like Henry Weinhard's Draft Root Beer. No, dude. Just go A&W.
But hey, even root beer should have a niche, and Barq's doesn't come in
a bottle.

Janc, do you have a source for ginger beer in A2? I love the stuff.

I'd like to try ginger beer. Birch beer is interesting, too.
