- Chapter 1
-
I waited.
I waited in the alley.
I waited in the alley around the corner from the entrance to
the apartment building.
- Chapter 2
-
I crouched down behind some garbage pails so that I could
not be seen from the street. My periscope afforded me a view
of the entrance.
Hours passed. The overcast sky threatened rain, but none
had fallen yet. I kept still, perfectly still, my eye glued
to the periscope. I must not be seen, but I must see.
- Chapter 3
-
People came, people left. Singly, or in pairs. Young people.
Old people. But in all those hours, not the one person I was waiting for,
the one I must intercept, the one I must stop at all costs.

Chapter 4
Suddenly I was aware of someone standing right behind me. Eye glued to
my periscope, I felt helpless. Legs aching from crouching down for hours,
I couldn't even hobble fast to make a break for it. Then I smelled the
smell.
Chapter 5
"Heyey buddy...ja spare me a bita change?" blurted in my ear from inches
away. The body and gin odor was grew stronger with every word.

Her cheap perfume filled the air. I started sneezing, eyes running from the
stinging scents.

But still my eye was glued to the periscope. And still the person I needed
had not passsed.
