I won a Mac Mini! What next. . . ?
|
Mar 19 22:43 UTC 2007 |
I won a Mac Mini, one month old (so it has 11 months warranty remaining) for
$115 less than retail. :) I am happy that I was not sniped for once! 1.66
GHz Core Duo, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB Hard drive, wireless keyboard and mouse. This
is my first Mac. Do they have the usual PC hidden costs, like anti-virus and
firewire software? Do I even need to worry about it? Also, can I run X11 apps
on Tiger? I need some kind of MS-compatible word processor, so I was thinking
of going with OpenOffice. . .

unsure on the OS stuff, as i hear, read, know
you dont really have to worry about antivirus, macs have so very few
viruses and such.
either way, thanks for the item creation, and have fun with the win!

I've used open office for several months now, and find it perfectly workable
even when sharing files with MS users.

Yeah, I'm looking at the games, and if you're not a Blizzard fan, you're kind
of SOL. :P

Re resp:0:
- With OS X, you basically don't have to worry about viruses.
- Yes, OS X will run X11, although it's not installed by default.
If whoever you bought it from installed it, you should be able to
see it in /Applications/Utilities. If not, you can install it from
the distribution DVD.
- Rather than OpenOffice, I'd suggesting getting NeoOffice, an Aqua
version of OpenOffice that doesn't need X11.

The Mac's apps are crashing at random times and running Rember shows memory
tests failing. :( I don't have the original sales slip. Will Apple still
honor the warranty? I just found out they want you to have the sales slip to
back up your warranty claim. I emailed the seller to find out if he installed
the RAM upgrade himself (to 1 GB) or if Apple did it for him. He has also not
left feedback since the auction ended. I'm a little worried he was a dishonest
seller. . .

well i dont know, ive never owned an apple product except my ipod.
but im getting that feeling too.
i may be getting scammed on an item i paid for and shipped the item to
the seller to be modified, no emails in over a week, last i heard he
said he had the "wrong zipcode"
im trusting him, but its pissing me off that ive been waiting so damn
long. and now nothing....

Oh, not cool! Did the iPod not have a warranty left so you could take care
of the modification yourself?
I spent Saturday night finding out which 512MB module was causing problems,
then removed it. Took it to the fruit stand on Sunday and it took five hours
for them to confirm my findings. :P Fifteen minutes to closing, the "genius"
put in two 256MB modules and was ready to send it home with me until I told
him I had a gig of RAM when I came in. Oopsy! They didn't have a 512MB to
replace the bad one (he had used a 256MB thinking that's what he was
replacing), so the Mini will stay there until they get a 512MB module in a
couple days. I fully expect to be fighting for my full 1GB of RAM again. .
. :( What's sad is that this is still the best customer service I've ever
got from a computer vendor! I'm actually pretty happy it's going so well. :)
Does it make you uncomfortable to hang out at the "genius bar" too, being
served by hipsters with "genius" in bold letters on their shirts? And
surrounded by laptops playing Apple commercials and blaring shitty U2? I
really hope I don't have to spend too much more time in there. :|

lol, he is still in high school, so that does take up a lot of his
freetime, so im giving him the benifit of the doubt, plus he did it
for so little money....
im having a xbox 360 controller "modded" so that the ring of light is
now blue instead of green, the guide (X) button is gonna be blue, and
the A,B,X,Y buttons are light up.
llamma.com charges nearly 60$
this guy did it for 20$ plus my half of shipping. its a hell of a deal.

I got the Mini back from in-store repair and it works like a charm. It had
a gig in it, just like when I took it in, and there was no additional hassle.
Now everything installs correctly the first time I try. :)
I'm trying to get the seller to mail me the sales slip so the warranty is as
long as it should be.
Anybody with an Apple ever use Apple Care?

I've used Apple Care, but not for anything major. On my old Powerbook,
the feet had a bad habit of coming off, so I needed new feet as well as
glue to fasten them on. I was able to get those at no charge and
negligible hassle with one phone call to Apple Care.
