I've been looking for a good contractor for gutter/downspout replacement.
I've had two contractors visit to give estimates, and am somewhat surprised
by the cavalier fashion in which they create a verbal estimate on the spot.
One looked some stuff up in a book and stated a single number cost estimate
for what I described having done, but did not provide any sort of breakdown
of costs, nor provide general information like warranties. The other
contractor also provided an immediate verbal estimate, but with a wide
range (like, "$1,500 to $2,500), and wasn't even familiar with the particular
material I wanted used. It's almost as though neither *really wanted*
the job.

But that experience dealing with contractors. More specifically, I've
chosen the Alcoa "Leaf Relief" anti-leaf system, but would be interested
in anyone else's experiences with that or "Gutter Helmet" or other
systems.

We opted for a 1' overhang and gravel around the part of the house where it
slopes towards the house. THe rest slopes away from the house. No gutters
needed, nothing to clog. We might put some over the doorways.

How is the footing for the house drained?

The footing is not drained. The side with the wrong slope has a 2' trench
full of gravel next to it which I ought to weed more often. The house is on
a hill and not likely to flood, but there is also a spring running under it
(between Spring and Fountain streets). We dug part of the footing under
water.
