Are You In Control? Mark Unseen   May 21 10:57 UTC 1992

Do you think you're in control of your life, or are you just sort of
going along for the ride?

Which way is better?

I prefer self-propelled transportation.

I'm very much in control of my life right now. Not that it
helps all that much :-).

Studying Stoic and Existentialist philosophy lead me to believe
that, ultimately, I can be as much in control of my life as I
want. Choice is *always* there, if you look for it and are willing
to take the consequences. Keeping your desires modest gives you
a great deal of economic freedom -- which gives other freedoms in
our society :( -- and gives one the flexibility to ride out
difficult times. ( I remember reading an article about 'hard times'
in the late '80s in the Wall Street Journal, where a couple was
complaining how hard it was to make ends meet on $200,000 a year.)

I'm along for the ride right now--I'm not sure I've *ever* been in full control
but at times I've tried harder and produced a better illusion. When hard
work and a good attitiude are sufficient to ensure dinner on the table, then
I'll believe it may be more than an illusion.

I seem to be along for the ride, with fear and desire at the tiller.

The ride is alright if the vehicle is comfortable. I just
don't know about the control idea.

Dunno, Suzie--your vehicle looks pretty comfortable, but who's driving if not
you?? ;)

Sometimes we can't control what happens to us, but we can always control our
response to it, and our attitudes about it. These are what determine our
happiness, the attainment of which is our reason for being.

At this very moment in my life I've just started looking back and trying
to see where I had control. I have to wonder how many things in my life
happened because I made a choice, and how many were made by default
because of my lack of making a choice.
