If you can in good faith, appeal. In the meantime - use all search
facilities to the utmost.

Someone from grex should talk to dpc. He has been looking around for
places for Arbornet. Perhaps he would be willing to share the information
he has gathered. I dont know how helpful you will find the information
but it could save someone a lot of time.

BTW, I did give a little notice to Pattrice Maurer on tonight's "Tenant Talk"
show on WCBN 88.3 FM letting the radio audience know that we are looking for
any leads. Good luck!

I still think getting a sponsor to provide a location might be an anser
answer...all grex needs is an empty office in some building with 24 hour
access. Maybe one of the local media outlets (a radio station or the a2
news or something) would sponsor grex...most of those operate 24 hours...
I can see it now...
"Welcome to grex, from cyberspace communications and the Ann Arbor News!"

doesnt the lease allow for the standard sixty days notice?
Actually, digging out the floor a little in a small room doesnt sound
like a big deal. the landlord can pay for that, or most of it. The fire
door should be appealed though...why is a fire door needed when noone is
usually there!

#8: _I_ hav~
(oops...sorry)
#8: _I_ haven't ;)
#9: Has anyone lookinto those "fancy" or "expensive" places? Don't rule
them out just because you can function in a dungeon!
#11: I think grex is now paying about $125 in rent and electric. I'd think
rent of up to $175 would be doable if it included utilities.
#3: By all means use any legal means to appeal/delay the deadline. AA
Tenants Union might be able to help, of the Dispute Resolution Center.
#15: If you are really in deep sh*t, and don't mind the hassel, you can
hold out beyond the deadline like a squatter. It takes at least 60
days er...days before an eviction order can be applied for and usually
another 30 days after that before a sherriff physically puts you out
on the street. NOT desireable, but keep on looking for a home.

\#18...either that or barricade the dungeon in afreemen like showdown, \
declaring the dungeon to be a separate country (grex township) and refuse
to recognize the eviction orders. Only prohblem is they'd probably turn
off the electricity and grex would go down...oh well :)

Here's another thought...look for a place that is open 24hrs a day (like a
Krogers, pharmacy, convienience store, etc). MAYBE, just maybe, you can swing
a closet just large enough to house the grexb0x, and access wouldn't be a
problem. Anyone know ann independant owner of a 24hr gas station or
conveience store?

Heh, that's a great idea, Jan :-).
Current rent and electricity is $25/mo and $83/mo respectively.
Ricky makes a good point that $175 with utilities included is
equivalent to $92 without utilities. (Still pricey, but the utils
help a lot). There's still the ethical matter of disclosing our
utility bill to a potential landlord; I hope we'd do so. Grex
seems like a relatively stable tenant, and could sign a fairly
lengthy lease, which might make up for that.
The ad Ricky mentioned was "Studio/office, Downtown Ann Arbor,
$175/mo and up. Free utilities and parking. 994-8791."
I also saw a "Downtown office, 110 to 2500 sq. ft., Goodyear
Bldg, 122 S. Main 769-8111"...no price, but 110 sq. ft. is pretty
small, so it might be cheap. If it were $11/sq ft (annually),
that would be about $100 a month. (Most downtown offices seem
to be in the $10-$14/mo range).

Yes, Grex could probably squat in that room and make the landlord have to
evict us. And yes, it would probably take him some time to do that. However,
while we were doing that, our landlord, who has already done way more to help
us than he had to (starting with giving us the space for almost nothing, as
well as fighting thecity for us) would be incurring big fines while we stay
there. That isn't something we want to do to him.
Besides, I'd imagine the city could probably still shut us down, even if we
were still staying in the room.
