Arbornet Board Invites Grex, HVCN Board Members to Meeting Mark Unseen   Jun 13 17:39 UTC 1996

Last night the Arbornet Board unanimously invited the members
of the boards of Grex and HVCN to a meeting to explore areas of common
interest. Other interested folks are, of course, also welcome.
Some of the areas mentioned by Board members were the future
of conferencing, possible sharing of space, and coordination of
information-sharing and -linking efforts.
        We don't think we need a chairperson or a formal agenda;
we look at this meeting as sort of a "brainstorming" session. It
would hopefully last a couple of hours or so.
We didn't set a time or place. I'm sure we could use a
conference room in the NEW Center.
We hope this can be the beginning of some worthwhile collaboration.
Would anyone like to suggest dates and times that are either
good or impossible because of scheduling conflicts?
        Y'all come!!

My next two weeks are crowded beyond belief, but don't
wait up on me...

I'd likely be happy to attend. Net week is fine. The week after is
Grexstock, and I will be missing.

I'll attend if I can. I'm pretty busy most of the summer, though.

The New Center is not acceptable to me. I would like to see Arbornet's
plan, agenda, or outline for the meeting. Other than those two minor
details, lets talk.

(I've never been to the New Center, what's objectionable about it?)

Are staff members of the organizations invited?

I'd like to go. Not sure yet about scheduling. The week of Grexstock is
definitely out. Other than that, I might be here or might not. If I'm here,
I'll go.

I'm very interesting in meeting and brainstorming.
Evenings in general are fine, except Friday.
I might be going up to the BeBox demo Monday night 6/17.

New Center's conference rooms are really quite nice, better than anything else
we are likely to get access to. Is the objection to meeting on Arbornet turf?
I think if that turns out to be a problem, then we aren't going to be able
to accomplish anything no matter where we meet, so it doesn't matter anyway.
If this is going to be a mind-game show, with people struggling for
psychological advantage, then the sooner we find out, the better.

However, the table *must* be circular.

I've been reminded that the NEW Center, in a fit of administrative
brilliance, cuts off its air conditioning after office hours! So
it would probably be better to consider the AA District (formerly
Public) Library.
Please keep posting scheduling suggestions/problems. Thanx!

Yes, a circular table, but it also has to be a circular room, with windows
all around, overlooking the same scene outside....or maybe have the room
rotate. I know a restaurant.....

The New Center is not acceptable to me. Period. This is not your
father's Oldsmobile!

Is your father's Oldsmobile related to Governor Engler's Oldsmobile? 8-)

I'm still curious as to why the NEW Center is not acceptable.

I'll second that. Arnold, mind telling us *why* the New Center is
unaccaptable?

a Buick!

I've been thinking about the options we have for a place
to meet. Frankly, *all* of them are not what I would call "welcoming"
environments: hard chairs, long tables, non-cuddly in general.
I offer an alternative: Meet at my house, 1418 Broadway, AA.
I can even say with a straight face that because my law practice runs
out of the house, it is a "public accommodation."
Some may want to know the shape of the tables. Here are
the dimensions:
House dining room table: A "flattened oval." The central
portion is a rectangle 40" x 18". There are two semicircular wings
of 20" radius.
Deck table: Another "flattened oval." The central portion
is a rectangle 36: x 19". Two semicircular wings, 18" radius. Actually,
the entire table top is a single piece of transparent glass.
Deck serving table: Lower than the main table, round, 16"
in diameter, translucent glass.
My house has been used for Arbornet meetings in the past.
We can stuff 20 people or so into the living room and dining room
combined.
So I offer a 4:00 weekend afternoon meeting, followed by a
6:00 cookout on the deck.

I suggest the week _following_ the grexstock outing. And, hopefully, grexers
there will informally brainstorm ideas to bring up at the mass meeting.

I appreciate the offer in #19, but, it seems we'd be _limited_ to about 20
people. I have no idea if everyone will show up, but the three BoDs combined
approach that limit and other interested guests (such as me) could grow that
number to over 30+ in a best-case scenario.

I think we should find a meeting room at the library, Mi Union, Mi League,
almost any campus room available, or think about restaraunts/hotels (at which
we'd have to buy food to get a room most likely) such as the basement at
Banfields (on Packard E of Platt), the Holiday Inn North Campus, Webers ($$),
Sheraton, etc. Even the community room at Arborland is a possibility, or WCC,
or basement at Cottaqge Inn, etc, etc, etc.

robh
response 22 of 229: Mark Unseen   Jun 16 17:30 UTC 1996

How certain are we that *everyone* from every BoD will be
showing up?

F'r instance, if it's a Saturday, I work, so I can't go. Period.

Surely some of the other folks who are invited won't be able to
attend, no matter which day we pick?
