Free phone installation 'til June 7 Mark Unseen   Apr 30 04:50 UTC 1996

Ameritech is offering free installation of business lines from now until June
7. I'm not sure whether you need to have a coupon or if the offer is open
to any business.

I don't think we need more phone lines right this minute, since three of the
ones we already have aren't doing anything right now. But I figured I'd
mention the option since it's there.

Gee, too bad we ordered those two new ones before we needed them and when this
sale was not going on. How long has it been since the last time this offer
came around? Maybe grex shouldn't buy new phone lines without waiting for
free instalation.

Yeah, the rough thing is that you never know when Ameritech is going to offer
the free installation deal again. It might be next month, or it might not
be for another year. Sometimes the need for more phone lines is more urgent
than that. :)

Ameritech offers the installation deal 3 times per year, I believe.
Arbornet got it by surprise one time; we ordered 4 phone lines and found
out about free installation after we had placed the order. That was
nice!

When Grex ordered the lines, it was fairly urgent, it's just been a
unexpectedly very long delay to get modems for them. Though in the future,
perhaps modems should be acquired and configured before calling Ameritech.

Well, generally scheduling stuff with Ameritech is the time consuming part,
and buying modems is a snap. This time it happened to go the other way.

Hey, Jeff Kaplan suggested calling Ameritech and asking if we can have the
installation charges back, since we just barely missed the sale.

The last time I remember Grex buying a couple modems and lines,
it was also a month or two between lines being installed and modems
being hooked up. Am I misremembering?

I think you are remembering right, but I don't think it was acquisition of
modems that slowed the process last time. Am I remembering right?

Ameritech usually finds way of messing things up. This last
install was no different. They scheduled me for a Saturday morning
installation, and then at 11:30am when I called they said no, they
wouldn't do this, and they'd install them on monday. I got them
to come out on Saturday anyway, but the installation person couldn't
because of the condition of the cable on West Liberty. They did manage
to get things installed on Monday however, but even that didn't go
completely right, because one of the lines was in our trunk hunt, and
another wasn't. I'd told them to keep both lines off the hunt 'till
later.

Ameritech has a perfect record of screwing something up every time
I have been invovled with them, for Grex things. Every time.

Suggestion: Document all this in writing to Ameritech, Certified RRR. Then
after a decent interval. Call the local radio station Ombudsman - Asa?

Speaking of Ameritech screw-ups... we've had a few reports of people using
their modem to dial 761-3000 and hearing a person's *voice* answer. I think
Ameritech may have plopped someone else's line in the middle of Grex's
trunk-hunt. Again.

Aha. That happened to *me* at some point. I presumed that my modem had
somehow messed up the dial, but maybe not.

Argh! I can think of few worse fates than to have one's personal
voice number in Grex's trunk hunt.

Around 1986 or so, some poor older man who knew nothing about
computers had his number inserted into M-Net's trunk hunt. He was
just beside himself, trying to answer calls but no one would answer
him.

The good thing is that Ameritech, once they knew they'd done
this to someone, fixed it very quickly.

I'm going to call Ameriech today.

Yeah, they did it to someone maybe a year ago, when we got new phone lines,
too, and again 2 or 3 days ago.
