Cyberspace Communications finances through 1/31/96 Mark Unseen   Feb 9 14:50 UTC 1996

Here is the treasurer's report on Cyberspace Communications
finances through January 31, 1996

General Fund
        Beginning Balance $2,267.79
        Credits $228.00 Deposit 1/4
                                   $252.00 Dues
                                    $80.00 Modem fund
                                   $164.25 T-shirts

        Debits ($25.00) Dungeon Rent
                                   ($83.00) Electricity
                                   ($20.00) Innovative Concepts phone line
                                  ($246.28) phone bill
                                    ($4.55) bank service charge

        Ending Balance $2,613.21

Looks like we did all right on paper. The $228 was actually the dues
collected in December, though. We benefitted greatly from llanarth's and
popcorn's T-shirt sales, but bear in mind that we haven't reimbursed llanarth
(via aruba) yet, and that will come to $98.12 . If you subtract that and the
modem contributions (since their purpose is already spoken for) and the
December contributions out, we lost $60.70 this month.

Dues are still only $6/month or $60/year, and there is a special offer on
right now: if you become a member before 2/29, you will get a free copy of the
Grex manual that Misti has written. Send cash, checks, or money orders
(payable to Cyberspace Communications) to:

Cyberspace Communications, Inc.
P.O. Box 4432
Ann Arbor, MI 48106-4432

Note this is a ***NEW ADDRESS*** (though the old one will still work, unless
danr turns renegade and starts saving up checks until he has enough to fly to
Tahiti. But that would take a long time, and he was treasurer for 4 years, so
I think we can trust him. ;))

how much does the PO Box cost? Or is Grex mail subsumed under another
addressee (a quite normal, typical, nominal operation)?

Oh, right, I forgot about that. Grex owes me $43 for the P.O. Box and 3 keys.

why a p.o. box? why not just somebody's house?

Well, for one thing, when we change treasurers next, we'll have
the same address. If Mark became sick all of a sudden, we could
pick up with someone else more easily. The downside of course is
that someone has to get the mail, but now we aren't tied to any
one house for mail corrospondance. Overall I think it is a good
thing.

The idea was to be able to have a consistent address so that it doesn't have
to change every time we switch treasurers. It's an idea that's been batting
around for well over a year, I think. If I'm remembering correctly, that $43
is for a full year. Not bad.

Yes, the box costs $40/year. I requested this, because I rent my apartment
and so my address will change eventually and it would be nice if Grex's didn't
have to change with it. (And, of course, as STeve said, we will change
treasurers eventually.)

Grex's address shouldnt be someone's house. With the CDA in effect,
it will be wise if Grex is a little harder to find than that! PO
Boxes can be switched around!

Oh, if they want to find us, they can call the phone company. Or have our
Internet access provider cut us off.

No system on the net can hide. Well, they could, sort of, but
it would involve illegal things and noone would be able to ever
telnet to a stable address.
Grex should be upfront all the way.

Cyperspace Communications is a Michigan corporation, and as such
the names and addresses of all the Board members are on file with
the state.

And the official address, and contact person, for Grex, are those of the
registered address and resident agent, as required by state law.

Hide? Are you serious? Folks, this is a piece of cake for the cops.
And well it should be. Anyway, what are we hiding from? Please tell me.

I do think this was meant in jest... It is an amusing if weird
exercise in techno-gobble trying to figure out how to do such a
thing.

When I got the P.O. box, I had to give my real address, and because the box
was for a business, sign a thing saying they could divulge my real address to
anyone who asked for it.

By the way, as I mentioned in the "Becoming a member" item, despite several
new members lately we have dropped to 89 members. (I had to remove 8 people
today.) There are 17 more members who will expire by the end of this month if
I don't hear from them. I think we should be ALARMED.

A year ago there was an infusion of new memberships, mostly annual ones, from
the people in California who enjoyed our system (mostly in the Accordions
conference). They supported us, and we appreciated that, but now they have
founded their co-op system, the "river", and I don't think those memberships
would be renewed no matter what we did. We need people who are using Grex now
and enjoying it, to come forward and help us run it by paying for a little
electricity, or an internet or local phone connection. $6/mo %60/year
