Grex member opinion survey, last question Mark Unseen   Aug 17 02:48 UTC 1996

This is the last question of the Grex member opinion survey, explained in
the previous item.

19. Any final comments about what Grex is doing right or wrong?
(Please try to keep your answer reasonably brief.)

[I've included all the non-empty answers that were given to this
question, and removed a couple references that would indicate
the author's identity, as noted in the response. -ra]

19. Grex is a great community, where you can share your ideas without
people being biased against you for any reason (age, mainly, for me), and
you can have fun talking to other people. (Internet access is a plus, too).

19. IT IS A GREAT SYSTEM - I CAN NOT SUGGEST A CHANGE - HAVE NEVER
USED USENET NEWS, PERHAPS I WOULD LIKE THAT?

19. I think before the budget items listed in #17, get rid of the
dumb modems. It would also be nice if there were fewer slow modems.
Usenet might be OK especially if we can agree on a way to raise money
from people who feel strongly about it. I have a good newsfeed on my
ISP, so it doesn't matter to me personally anymore.

19. Uff Da.

19. The one thing that bugs me most - no graphics on web pages :(
(Though I do understand why) Other than that, nothing huge. :)

19. I would encourage membership more, still too many people don't
know that grex is member supported. Especially in party. If they knew
that thier money could help grex get faster they would be willing to give
some money.

19. We need to persuade more of our adherents to support us. We have a
great group of members, but there are a great group of non-members who
could be members. I wish I knew what to say to convince them to join us.

19. I think it's great that you guys have your little Thursday-night
get-togethers and walks in the Arb, etc. It's just too bad that I'm
currently too busy to join in. Maybe I will sometime when my daily
schedule is not so hectic :)

19. Everything seems to be OK. Grex may be growing a little too fast --
seems there are more uptight/unfriendly types on recently.

19. As noted earlier, I think that Grex is provides a great public service
-- and since most of its services are provided for free, I don't see much
to complain about.

I do think, however, that Grex might find it a little easier to raise the
funds that it needs to stay in operation if it had greater public visibility
in the community at large. Surely we must have some folks with marketing
degrees among the Grex membership. Perhaps they might suggest ways to
enhance Grex's "public profile." This is really a great service, and I think
contributions would increase if more people knew about it.

19. I'm feeling a sudden wave of apathy wash over me . . .

19. Grex does a darn good job of whatever it is that it does, and that
is sometimes hard to exacly define. Grex deserves a lot more support
than it gets. Grex should be more of a presence at "events" (ala Arbornet)
but that takes a lot of time and work. I know the problem.

19. So far this seems like a friendly, intelligent place to get to
know some people around here and have a decent discussion.

19. I'm pretty well pleased.

19. um, no. =)

19. Comment: I've been delighted at having a prompt casual means of
emailing my friends and relatives across the country and world.
I'm not a nerd, but I am a nice person who needs a Grex booklet
or other reading matter that will help her approximate a nerd.
Please send me one at the address above and delete any mentions
of my name and address in this response? Thanks to wonderful
volunteers doing great things. When's the next concert of
innocents (one of the last holdouts for creativity)?

19. Many thanks to staff for their responsiveness, helpfulness and support.
They work very hard and this is a good system. I am imapatient when I can't
log on for long periods of time, sometimes for days and I have limited times
when I am not working.

19. No further comments. Thank you for asking.

19. Grex makes no corporate effort to be a charitable non-profit,
as its Articles say it is. It acts like a club, and is only
incidentally of public service. Not only that, but you didn't even
ask whether anyone uses Grex for charitable, non-profit purposes.
Shows how much this *purpose* of the corporation is in everyone's
mind. Incidentally, I do: I maintain an office account for the
[non-profit removed to protect respondee's identity. -ra], and a
forwarding and web page account for the [removed again. -ra].
It would also have been interesting to find out if anyone uses
Grex for a business account.

19. wish there was a way to attract more members <sigh>

19. I like Grex as it is. Ohters don't. My wife doesn't like it
because of the lines often being busy and she has difficuly getting
around. She'd get around eaiser if it were a typical menued BBS.
I wouldn't change things too much though. It's nice enough just
as it is and there is no lack of users.

19. I love Grex and think it's a wonderful place.

19. Heh. we really need to do a better job of promoting oursevles.
We're lowkey to the point of it hurting ourselves.

19. I believe grex really is what it is, whether it is good for my needs or
not, I'm not aware enough of all the aspects of the group to really judge.

19. GIVEN ITS ALL-VOLUNTEER NATURE, I THINK THE FOLKS INVOLVED IN
"RUNNING" GREX ARE DOING A TREMENDOUS JOB!

19. Grex does a great job of coping with fiscal realities and technical
issues. We have a very dedicated volunteer staff.

19. It still allows Kerouac on, doesn't it? Is this not reason enough?

[I think this was meant as an extension to a negative response to 18. -ra]

19. I'm happy.

19. It seems like you'd have more paying members if there were more perks
for membership. I suppose that you'd run the risk of losing a lot of
traffic...but is that so bad? and how much traffic would you lose?

19. I appreciate the service it provides to the community..thanks and
keep up the great work....let me know if I can help somehow.

19. The GREX HELPERS are the BEST! Most people using Grex are great. I
really wish some of the arguments and flaming would stop, or, at least
slow done some.

19. I enjoy the cf's a lot. The concept is amazing. Part time work allows me
just enough money for grex membership. I think $6.00(US) is a great deal for
the conversation, e-mail, and occasional forays on the net.

19. I think the people who want to shut down party, should just refrain from
joining party.

19. I look forward to a push into web-based conferencing.

19. (I think Grex is doing a whole lot right and as long
as the Grex community as a whole is encouraged to think
of it as their system and be involved in how it's run
we'll not lack for the essential enthusiasm, volunteer
effort, or necessary financial support.)

19. Add a graphical internet interface
