How does one enter a permanent party name such that people with similar
interests may go to it on a regular basis?

One sends mail to the party admin, which is currently popcorn.
There are a bunch of thigs you need to tell her first, which
I'm sure she'll tell you in a response shortly after this one. >8)

Actually, the party administrators are popcorn and nephi (and me, but don't
count on me to actually do anything if you send requests to me).

Type "!party-faq" at the next prompt for a list of frequently asked
questions about party. Question #7 tells you what information I'll
need from you to add a permanent party channel.

Ok, I'll think about it. I was thinking it would be nice to have a channel
titled "Over 30" or something to that effect, so it would separate the student
group from other, older people who may want to chat.

Well, there should be enough people to have interesting conversations for
everyone!

Oldfolks has no right being a private channel.

Thats right. More people can rightfully claim to join each
day.

Private? who said anything about private?

I'm with you, Mark. I would like to have access to a party line that in some
way conveys to its participants that the conversation will be serious.
If that was your intent.

response 12 of 124: Mark Unseen   Sep 10 15:42 UTC 1995

Audrey - that definitely was my intent. I'll make a note and drop a line
asking for a permanent party line be named something to convey the intent.
I have thought about "over 30" but that does not seem right. "adult" will
pull in the curious and keep away the serious, "mature" seems negative.
Any suggestions for an appropriate party line name?

"Serious" ?? "GreyPoupon"?? "Sober" ??
some obscure synonym for serious?
selena
response 15 of 124: Mark Unseen   Sep 12 06:51 UTC 1995

Oldfolks is a private channel owned by llanarth. It shouldn't be
that way.

How so? She should be shut out of the normal ask-for-it-&-you-get-it
policy?

Of course, the whole concept of "owning" a party channel is a bit nebulous.
Llanarth's name isn't anywhere on the Oldfolks channel. The party program
doesn't give her any special privilages or control over that channel.
She just happens to be the person who originally requested that the channel
be created as a permanent channel.

I suppose the real question in that case (Oldfolks) is whether the other
channel participants treat llanarth differently.

response 19 of 124: Mark Unseen   Sep 15 16:43 UTC 1995

Yes, well, it shouldn't BE a permanent channel!

I'm beginning to wonder if there should be any alternate channels
on Grex at all.
lilmo
response 21 of 124: Mark Unseen   Sep 15 19:51 UTC 1995

Why not? (steve and selena) Not having been in party, I'm not getting
defencsive about this, I'm just curious.
selena
response 22 of 124: Mark Unseen   Sep 17 03:41 UTC 1995

        Well, here's the basic problem:
Some of us <not just myself> don't feel anyone should have been able
to request that channel name for their own, as it's based on a
neat spontaneous channel called oldfolks_x, which was used fairly
regularly by jemart, magnoon, myself, mziemba, mdw, jade, and others..
those who have been here awhile, in general.
I've been told, "so, just go into party, and start up an
oldfolks_x channel." That has some serious problems. Because llan
requested to have Oldfolks made a permanent channel, if anyone went
and made an "oldfolks_x", it would be easily percieved by llan, or
others, as being a blatant anti-llan move. This place has enough
personal dynamics to make upsetting ANYONE a bad move, so now
oldfolks_x hasn't been used much at all, and Oldfolks isn't getting
any use, because the move to let someone have the channel to
themselves leaves a bad taste in the mouths of at least a few
of the key people who used to use it. <Run-on sentance? I think so!>
I mean, it's all in what the channel was to begin with.
If brighn or I requested a Feyrealm channel, well, seeing as we
are the only users of feyrealm_x in party, that would be fine.
Same with Balance, llan, or any other channel llanarth has.
But Oldfolks <and, thus, oldfolks_x> has a history of usage
by MANY people, and shouldn't *be* just assigned to anyone.
And no, I'm not mad that I didn't request it before she
did. I don't believe anyone should have been able to get that
channel name.

response 23 of 124: Mark Unseen   Sep 17 04:51 UTC 1995

Um, since Oldfolks doesn't have a noisetab, there's nothing about it that
gives any one person control over it. As such, I'm not sure how you say that
llanarth, or anytbody else for that matter, owns it. If llanarth owns that
channel, then I must own everything on Grex that I have ever suggested.
lilmo
response 24 of 124: Mark Unseen   Sep 17 21:48 UTC 1995

Can you not treat Oldfolks as if it was oldfolks_x ??
