VOTE for Name of New Grex Newsletter. Mark Unseen   May 15 07:21 UTC 1995

A plan to create a Grex newsletter has been under discussion in the coop
cf for some time. Item 8 (Grex Newsletter) has discussion of the purposes,
organization, distribution, etc, for the newsletter, and Item 9 (Name of
Grex Newsletter) has proposals for naming the newsletter.

Twenty four (24) names have been suggested for the newsletter. There is
now in progress a VOTE to choose the five (5) most popular of those names,
after which there will be another VOTE to choose the "final" name. In the
current vote, ANY USER CAN VOTE. Just enter the command !vote at a
conference Ok: prompt, or the command vote at a unix prompt. How to vote
is explained there.

Very briefly, the newsletter is intended to promote better communications
among the members of Grex, as well as provide news concerning the system,
people involved in making it work, topical issues that do and may affect
how Grex operates, etc. It is known that many members do not read coop
frequently, and it is these supporters that the newsletter is especially
meant of reach. However, it is intended that it be of interest to all
members. Distribution will be on-line, but also optionally by printed
copies sent snail mail. Non-members would be able to read the newsletter
on-line. [Many details of editorial policy and production have not yet
been decided, so not much more can be said at this time. Read Item 8 in
coop for a history of thinking about these things, to date.]

Would this be a mailing list too? Personally I like 'Tales from the Grex side'
But it wasn't there. :(

What do you mean by "a mailing list"? While details are not final,
the newsletter would be distributed to members by the most effective
means, and everyone would be able to read it on-line.

We *did* have a couple of months of invitations to submit names for
the newsletter. Now we choose one of those. However, once the newsletter
is up and going, there is not reason it can't be named something else.

Was _The Grexxian_ misspelled?

The Grexxian was suggested in Item 9 in coop, response 1. No other
spelling was suggested.

Is "Grexxian" a misspelling? Should it be spelled "Grexian"?

There's no such thing as a "misspelling"! You're supposed to assume that
it's a matter of personal choice, & who are you to criticize someone else's
personal style?

I was talking about a mailing list as in listserv?

No, not a mailing list. It would have an editor, who would choose
and arrange contents. Grex itself is the "mailinglist"!

I like Grexxian the way it is. There are so few words with two x's in them.

We are not accepting new names to be voted upon, so "how abouts" don't
help. Vote! (Read the coop items first, though, so that your vote
is informed.)

personally, I like "The Grexian" (one or two x's is fine)

"one lump or two?" Bugs Bunny
"Duh, I'll have two" any cartoon character
"two it is!" BONK! BONK!

Something to keep in mind -- if you cast a vote and change your mind
afterward, just run the vote program again. Your new vote will over-
write the previous one.

How about the "Grexonomicon"?
Just a thought.

Back before an executive realized the double meaning, the Potash Corporation
of Saskatchewan had a newsletter called "The Continuous Borer." (Named
after their mining operations. What else could it mean?) Perhaps Grex
could find something equally apt.

I think nominations ought to be re-opened since the original item was
unfairly restricted to COOP where not that many people ahd a chance to
participate. This item should have been entered in Agora to begin with.

   Are you serious?
kerouac
response 24 of 141: Mark Unseen   May 21 01:43 UTC 1995

Yes...the coop items having to do with nominations for the newseletter
name SHOULD have been linked to agora. Only a small percentage of
people read coop, and by entering this item here you are asking a large
number of people to vote on a ballot they had no input on. I actually
think personally that the current nominations are fine but those items
should have been linked, and if nominations arent re-opened the results will
be tainted.
