UPS form K-12 Mark Unseen   May 12 17:22 UTC 1995

This is the quickest way for me to handle a problem.
Arbornet K-12 has a UPS for sale.
Steve Andre stated that Grex might be interested in it.
I need to know as soon as possible as k12 really needs the money.
we have other potential buyers lined up.

Please call me as soon as possible or e-mail me if that is easier.

Popcorn, you can answer as well, I hope. I need to get this resolved.

Staff is probably already clued in, but if it's open to public input, can you
give specs or a price for the UPS?

UPS?

Uninterruptable power supply.

This is a large honking UPS which could probably double as a
weapon. It would be enough to keep all of Grex running for a
while, like 10 - 20 minutes, although thats just a guess.
Bruce, how much are you thinking of? If you have a buyer
lined up, it sounds like you'll get a better price that way.

How much *is* it? You have me interested now.
steve
response 6 of 94: Mark Unseen   May 15 03:09 UTC 1995

I'm not sure, really. New, it would be at least $800, I'd
say. THe little UPS's aren't that expensive these days, but
after a certain power level the price starts going up.
Thats why I say that if M-Net has an interested buyer it
would probably make sense to sell it to them, as they'd pay
more for it. While I'd like to see such a system feeding all
of Grex, it isn't real high on my prio list.

Does grex at least have something decent to clean the juice comming
into it? If not, and since I read that you are considering upgrading
the Cpu, it might be time to consider something to do this...

Grex uses two power conditioners.
steve
response 9 of 94: Mark Unseen   May 15 14:35 UTC 1995

We're using one of our two conditioners at the moment, for the
Sun-3 and disks. We have a little UPS that was a dontation from
ajax, which runs Gryps. So we're pretty well covered on that score.

response 10 of 94: Mark Unseen   May 16 03:37 UTC 1995

We're willing to loan it to Grex for a couple of weeks if you want to
test it and make sure it works, and see if it fits your needs. Then we'll
pop you for the money, after you're so dependent on it you can't live
without it any more. (-:
That's an offer we couldn't make for an individual, I'm afraid.
I was the one who offered this to Grex at first. This thing is a
monster; I wasn't thinking of it as something an individual can use. It
takes two people to pick it up.
If Grex isn't really interested, I guess I'll suggest to Bruce we put
it up for sale to the public. I think we'll ask for $250 for it, but that
is Bruce's decision to make. If anyone (nephi?) is interested, please
mail bap@arbornet.org and jep@arbornet.org. If Grex does want it, I'll
ask Bruce to give right of first refusal to you. If not, I'll suggest we
offer it for sale to the public.

Sure sounds like a good deal, but that is a big chunk of Grex's budget :).
Out of curiosity, does anyone know how many times Grex has lost power in the
dungeon, and if any damage (other than "normal" reboot damage) occurred?
(Not that Grex will necessarily be *staying* in the dungeon....)
steve
response 12 of 94: Mark Unseen   May 16 17:24 UTC 1995

We've lost power once, that I know of. Usually things have been
very stable here, but we're headed for Interesting Weather Season,
which means that whatever data we had is likely to go out the
window. For those of you who don't what Weather, but Climate,
Ann Arbor gets 3 - 12 terrific thunderstorms during the summer,
and we'll lose power probably half the time. A nice 1.5 second
outage is all it takes to have a nice reboot on hour hands.

$250, eh? That is starting to make me drool.
   Hmmm...

Steve, what if *I* donated some of the funds? Just for this. Not
for membership.. that's too much to ask, until we work out the verification
disagreement.. But I could possibly donate $100.00, if you could assure me
that we could get this..
        No, I'm not joking.

If it works, I'm willing to kick in $100 too.

That's $200.00. I *am* dead serious. I expect mdw is, too.
What do you say?

response 18 of 94: Mark Unseen   May 17 05:15 UTC 1995

There's no reason you would need to be verafied to donate. I don't see
why there would be a problem with an anonymous donation for this. Thanks,
selena!

response 19 of 94: Mark Unseen   May 17 06:42 UTC 1995

Right- I just want to be sure that mdw's and my money goes where
we have in mind..

response 20 of 94: Mark Unseen   May 17 07:02 UTC 1995

Designated donations must be used for the purpose donated, or returned
to the donor if that is not done. However, if you want your donation
to be considered deductible, you would have to be identified (...now,
I didn't say verified! ;->).

Sorry, nephi! STeve! How's it look? If it looks decent, I'm ready
to mail it!
jep
response 24 of 94: Mark Unseen   May 19 03:25 UTC 1995

Grex can take the thing "on approval". If it doesn't work, or won't
do what you need, or you get tired of having a UPS around the office,
bring it back after -- oh, let's say 3 weeks -- and you don't have to pay
for it.
I should probably ask for a post-dated check, since Arbornet is a
business and I really should protect it's interests. Hope this isn't
considered too unreasonable...
