Photography - New conference? Mark Unseen   Mar 25 17:43 UTC 1995

How do I start a new conference? I would like to try a PHOTOGRAPHY
conference under the hobbies section? The purpose would be to discuss
amateur photo issues - pro's would be more than welcome especially
if they would help us become better amateur photographers. Black and
white as well as color.

Sounds neat...see item #15, on conference creation. New conferences
are usually proposed in that item, but this works too, and you've already
completed the main step: proposing the conference here in co-op! Next
it gets talked about for a couple days, then you say "I still want it,"
then it gets created.

Generally, that's how it works, and I don't think this will be
controvertial enough to be shot down/delayed by anyone.. so long as
you dont try and post illegal .gifs of copyrighted photography! :>

I was thinking of only conferring. I don't even know how to post .gifs
and probably will never do so.

Oh.. so will posting about fashion photography be looked down on?

"photography" as a topic probably ought to cover about everything, just like
the music conf. covers all kinds of music. I would expect items about
lenses, film, and also things in the area of "big photo exhibit at the
Art Museum, who wants to go?". There isn't any content that is mandated
or restricted by the system itself (excepting the above-mentioned issue
of copyrighted material, and perhaps some technical restrictions (Grex's
limited capacity) that would preclude a lot of GIFs (imgage files) of
photographs).

Re: item #5 - Scott Helmke's note reflects my concept perfectly. Also,
item #4, Selena Barwens' question - we would be missing important and
exciting input if we "looked down on" posting about fashion photography.

Though I suspect that the focus will be on YOU behind the camera, with
not a lot of talking about your favorite photographers, or models... :-)

Re: Item #7 - Mark, I expect you are right, but only because I doubt if
very many people would or could converse about favorite photographers or
models. If they wanted to, I think it would be great.

Also, maybe not just "You behind the camera." How about "You in the darkroom"
or "Hey, there is a fantastic lighthouse at . . . ." etc., or "Have you
tried this little-known film / technique?"

Re #8: (These are responses to an item, not items themselves) I was speaking
in relative terms, and somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as well, (note smilie)  ;-}

There is the "ing" conference, where "photographing" could be tried out,
to see if a steady participation develops.

I kinda wondered what "ing" was, but not enough to find out. I think
the drawback to that idea is that of photography enthusiasts, a lot more
are likely to join a photography conference than an ing conference.

Agree, I wondered about "ing" but never found out. I think it would be
too sheltered to get mainline attention.

Then enter a Photography item into agora - where it will get frontline
attention. If there is enough interest, a separate cf would have obvious
support. It could be linked to a new Photography cf before spring turns
to summer, to keep that thread. I'm not *opposing* it - I'm just
generally more in favor of encouraging active cfs.

Ok, I will enter it in agora also. I agree, if it is not active it would
not be satisfactory.

Is there any harm done in creating a conference that *might* not be active?
The worse case is that no one will go there and it will be deleted. Just
one item doesn't sound like it could do justice to all the different
photography topics. I'm all for a photography conference.

The problem with that is that there are a lot of conferences that are
inactive that aren't being deleted. Then again, maybe we shouldchange
that. One thing I'd like to see happening is for conferences to have to
have fairwitnesses to stay around. It wouldn't be unreasonable to remove
conferences if nobody would fairwitness them. Afterall, we require
fairwitnesses before a conference will be created.

So far, conferences are never deleted. But I would support deleting really
inactive conferences, unless they are really databases, where people
can obtain information even if they don't enter any. A really *good*
info cf should never inspire anyone to respond!

I'll be creating the conference in a couple of days if McPoz still
wants it and someone (maybe McPoz?) is willing to fairwitness it.

response 19 of 26: Mark Unseen   Mar 30 02:47 UTC 1995

I'll tentatively offer to fairwitness the Photo (or Photography) conference.
I have a letter in mail I haven't read yet, and it probably is from Remmers
telling me what is involved in fairwitnessing. I'll get back to you.

response 20 of 26: Mark Unseen   Mar 30 11:54 UTC 1995

Fairwitnessing is a piece of cake. Go for it.

response 21 of 26: Mark Unseen   Mar 31 07:12 UTC 1995

Yeah. And if you like, I can mail you some FWing stuff I got from
M-net. It was very helpful for me.

Um, I've gotten the file, and it's in my home directory.

To read it, type !menumore /u/nephi/man/fwguide

Wow -- interesting stuff! I'd say some of it is M-Net specific, and
some of it is Steve Opal specific, but on the whole it's very thorough
and decently written.

response 24 of 26: Mark Unseen   Apr 6 16:28 UTC 1995

Wow, pretty thorough. It would probably help us cfadm trainees if there was
one of these we all agreed was the best (not to short, not too long) to
send to prospective fw's for new conferences.
