Agenda for the 1/22/96 Grex Board of Directors Meeting
|
Jan 16 15:40 UTC 1996 |
Here's the tentative agenda for the 1/22/96 Grex Board of Directors Meeting.
Please yell if there are items on the list you want added/changed/deleted.
British Columbia. Initial Gavel Banging - popcorn or srw < 1 minute
Alberta. Treasurer's Report - danr 5 minutes
Saskatchewan. 501(c)3 Committee Report - rcurl 5 minutes
Manitoba. Computer Rehab. Committee Report - rcurl 5 minutes
Ontario. Publicity Committee Report - mta 5 minutes
Quebec. Technical Committee Report - STeve 20 minutes
Prince Ed Island. Newsletter Report - rcurl 5 minutes
Nova Scotia. Election of 1996 officers - all 15 minutes
New Brunswick. New Business - all Who Knows?
Alaska. Final Gavel Banging - (1996 chair) < 1 minute
The board meeting will be on Monday January 22 at 7:30pm at ITI. The public
is welcome. Note that the meeting day has switched from Wednesday to Monday.
I'm not sure I'll be in town for this meeting. If I'm not here, I've asked
Steve Weiss to lead the meeting.
I think I've listed rcurl for some things he deeded over to someone else at
the last meeting. Please yell about what those things are. Also please
yell if you have additional agenda items -- I'm sure I've missed *something*.

Directions to ITI:
Take US-23 to the Washtenaw Ave. exit (exit 37B). This puts you on Washtenaw
Ave, going West. Turn right onto Huron Parkway. This winds and twists for
quite a while. Turn right on Hubbard, then make your first possible left into
ITI (which has a hard-to-read silver sign out front). Watch out for handicap
parking spaces when you park -- there are a lot of them. Inside ITI, go
straight back to the funky toys in the lobby. Turn left, and the cafeteria
is ahead and to the left.
On Huron Parkway, if you reach Plymouth Road, you've gone too far.
Another way to ITI is to take US-23 to the Plymouth Road exit. Go West on
Plymouth Rd, to Huron Parkway. Turn left onto Huron Parkway. Hubbard comes
up pretty quickly from that side of town; turn left onto Hubbard and then take
the first possible left to get to ITI.

What about Newfoundland, Northwest Territories, and Yukon Territory?

Yes, Newfoundland would have been more appropriate.

Newfoundland. Motion to relabel Alaska as Newfoundland 5 minutes
- bruin, robh
Labrador. Motion to relabel Newfoundland as
Newfoundland and Labrador - pedagogue < 1 minute
Yukon Terr. Motion to relabel above items as Mackenzie
and Keewatin. - sillyman 10 minutes
Nunavut. Motion Sickness - all Remaining Time

Would a discussion of establishing a validated "adult" group and permitting
some conferences only to that group be worthy of consideration?

This is not the Grex I joined.
The grex I joined would've laughed at the idea of validation
of age for access to any part of it. This is sad.
Oh, and NICE choice of agenda itemization. Next time you wonder
why I don't take these meetings seriously, maybe you should think
about the example you set.

Would it make sense to have the office elections earlier on the agenda?

Re 8: That makes sense to me. Traditionally they've always gone at the end
of the board meeting, and I've found it distracting for the rest of the
meeting until we get up to them.

Re #8, #9: For the last two years, officer elections have always
been at the beginning of the meeting.
Re #11: Rob, I hope that remark is not an early warning sign of
how you're going to interact with your constituency.

Another agenda item: Validator volunteer.
Some time ago the members voted in an internet access policy
that allows certain types of outbound internet access to
non-members. It hasn't been put into effect because the Unix
kernel modifications necessary to implement it hadn't been
written. But now they've been written, and presumably will
be in place when Grex moves to the Sun-4.
Validation has always been done by the treasurer, but the
new internet access policy will allow certain things to be
accessed by validated non-members, so validation is no longer
strictly tied to membership. A few months ago, the Board
passed a validation policy specifying the acceptable types
of id for validation and calling for a "validator"--a person
who validates people. We'll need this person soon.

Re "rcurl items" on agenda:
Price Ed Island: I was liaison between the newsletter editors and the
board when I was on the board. Someone else should now have that role -
I'd suggest Misti, since she is both an editor and a board member.
Manitoba: this is proceeding - slowly. I have a potential volunteer
for warehousing the inventorying the hardware we have. When that is
somewhere accessible (it isn't, in my house), we'll attempt to donate
it.
Saskatewan: this project has gone to the bottom of the heap. As time
has gone on, I have appreciated more and more chelsea's observation
that Grex is more like a club rather than what is stated in its Articles -
a non-profit charitable corporation. While the board has supported seeking
501(c)3 exemption, and it would have some financial advantages, the list
of activities of Grex to justify tax exemption is pretty thin. I have
therefore become discouraged. I would be glad to turn this project over to
another.
Nova Scotia should be the first order of business (as observed) so that
the board has someone to chair the proceedings. The alternative is to
elect a chair to conduct the meeting up until the new officers are elected,
which doesn't make much sense.

to all of Grex's Board members if a certain bill passes...
