Minutes of 12/13/95 staff meeting Mark Unseen   Jan 1 18:51 UTC 1996

These are the (somewhat abbreviated) minutes of the Dec. 13, 1995 staff
meeting.

 Staff meeting Dec. 13, 1995:

present were popcorn, srw, steve, robh, janc, and mdw.

 1. Dungeon key for scg: srw wants a direct tie to root access, most
agree but some argument over what is official policy. Most or all present
think he can be trusted, will recommend to board that scg be appoved for root.

 2. Sun-4 progress: srw brought a list from gregc of things left to do.
Greg did do a fair amount of work on some of those items. mdw reported that
he needs to get latest PicoSpan source from a backup tape, but the only other
thing he needs to do is httpd, which mdw doesn't trust and would like to get
a better version. STeve suggests going w/ current version until other
things are out of the way, but srw would like to have Marcus to do it right
from the start, mentioning concerns about increased Web access and CGI
availability (some discussion of httpd security).

Kernal blocks have been written and could be installed this weekend, as
soon as gregc and srw can get together.

mdw has built/debugged some of mju's changes.

Some discussion of password database issues on Sun-4, esp. the bogus
password expiration messages, which should go away as soon as people
change their passwords, and which won't be a problem when the big mass
 of users is copied over.

When to move Sun 4 into Dungeon? Soon, mdw thinks as soon as PicoSpan
 is done.

Buggy kernal disk patch: not sure about this patch, which we need but
aren't sure where to get a good version yet, but STeve thinks we will be
 able to find it.

Odd bits: nobody seems to have source for bbsed (mdw might have it on
 9-track tape).

It's about time to start testing. STeve has collected a few tricks to
try, probably when kernal blocks are done.

STeve mentioned that for wrappers the Bourne shell (sh) is much faster than
 csh.

 3. sendmail queued vs. background: STeve likes queue mode mode so he
can snoop for mailing lists, but background is probably a better way to run
it. mdw says that new versions of sendmail have been evolving and could be
useful for Grex, esp. w/ a much different queue mode. STeve would like a
way to log .forward files. Most seem to think background would be best,
 but no action yet.

Mailhog policy: should we let new limits operate, or keep moving mail?
We should still be looking at accounts with a history of abuse as reap
fodder. Also change threshold from 1 Meg to 600 K.

 4. Menus killing mail on logout: we are going to remove "kill" from
 exit code.

 5. Staff stepping on each other's toes: We need to be a little more
careful about using RCS and coordinating better. We will put more files
under RCS, and Valerie will enter an item on using RCS (rc.local thing
 that recently happened)

 6. Web interfaces to PicoSpan and newuser: more discussion of
politics and utilization than technical issues. Most would like to see
it happen. janc has nearly finished a Web version of newuser. PicoSpan
will be a bit tougher; mdw would like to redo PicoSpan for a client server
model as part of this, eliciting discussion of Web and PicoSpan details.

 7. Hardware: STeve found a source for 32M cards for $200, and bought
 two boards.

 8. AOL mail problem: some talk of people various staffers know who
might help. mdw thinks the problem ic a result of AOL firewalls being
too picky. STeve suggests sending mail to AOL about it. mdw suggest
setting up a separate mail machine that would be better at handling
some of the TCP stuff, probably a PC based box.

M-Net still offers bbsed. Does this mean that M-Net might be able to
provide the missing source code? (Ignore this question if it's unusually
stupid.)

Oh! At that staff meeting, people who use M-Net said that M-Net no longer
offers bbsed. Ja, if they have it, it's definitely worth asking.

They don't? Whatever it is that I use over there sure looks a LOT like bbsed.

I sent mail to roots@arbornet.org to ask about bbsed. Someone (Dave(?)
Jay(?) Thaler?) wrote back, saying that Jared had rewritten it from scratch.
I asked Jared if he could spare a copy for Grex to use. No answer yet.

Klaus, learning Pico is a snap.

Agreed, however when the system rans at such a high load average most of
the time, using bbsed seems to get things done faster than Pico.
