Dial-up Access Issues
|
Dec 28 20:33 UTC 1995 |
So far, in the month of December, there have been 2,331 logins to "newuser."
Of these, 86 were on dialup lines. The other 2,245 were network logins.
So we are getting an average of about 85 new users a day, of which 3 are
dialup users.
Now, 3 new dialup users a day isn't really bad, but it isn't really very
impressive either. I think we need to do some thinking about our local
accessibility.
- We need to advertize more locally.
- We need to change our settings to the more standard 8N1.
- We need to deal with the difficulty of connecting to non-error
correcting modems for people with error-correcting modems.
- It would be good to get our modems up to 14.4K.

I have fliers. I have lots of fliers. In the past, when we've papered the
downtown area and North Campus, we've gotten a rash of new dialin callers,
some of whom have gone on to be members.
Would anyone else out there be willing to help out on a weekend "paper party"
where we post at least 100 fliers around town in book stores, music stores,
coffee shops, and computer labs as well as UM bus stops and around married
student housing?
I'll organize it, I'll provide the fliers, and I'll supply gallons of cocoa
afterward to anyone who wants some. If you can't put aside time to meet with
a group on a weekend afternoon and want to help, then ask me and I'll give
you a stack of fliers to spread around on your usual circuit. Every one of
us frequents some place where GREX fliers would be appropriate and
welcome...even if it's only the office lunch room.

Interesting; thanks for looking this data up. 3 people via the dial
ins is, if anything, about what we saw before the internet came along.
In the file /u/steve/GrexStuff/newuuser_registrations there is a list
of how many runs of newsuer have completed for each day of Grex's
existence. It's intersting reading.
I do agree that we need to promote ourselves more. It's an interesting
thing, that probably more people in India know about us now (we've been
talked about at some length in some newsgroup there) than folks in
Ann Arbor.

Drop a load of the fliers next to the terminal at Webers. Even if nobody logs
in from there they might be prone to log in from home or work.

Webers? The restaurant, the bar, or something else?

I could help; depending on the weekend. I'll even bring my own staple gun!
(scott fondly reminises about hanging batches of local band posters back in
college when he had time to be in bands)

Sound great! We're usually forced to use tape because we don't have a strong
enough stapler.

Can some fliers (or an original flier that I can copy) be brought to the
grex walk this week? I'll hang them at EMU when the students come back for
the winter term, and I'll put one in the break room at work right now
before any more of the seasonal people go away.

Will do! I jhad planned on being at the walk anyway, so I'll bring a big
stack. If you want fliers, come along to the walk ... or at least meet with
the walkers at some point.

Might I suggest that while plastering the town with fliers is good,it would
also be a good idea to also implement some of janc's other suggestions. I'd
also like to suggest that it might be a good idea to couple all of this
publicizing with some kind of membership drive. December was a dismal
month--we barely received $200 in donations. That's not even enough to cover
our phone bill!

re#5:
In the bar at Webers. They have a terminal there where people can
use one of the commercial services at some ungodly per minute charge.
But, apparently, people love to spend their money!

I think it's $8/hr at Webers. Seems not ungodly to me, but "back when
I was a boy," Compuserve was $15/hr with your *own* computer.

I got e-mail today (from kase) who said he had been to the terminal at Webers,
but couldn't get it to connect to AOL. Eventually the bartender came over
and said that Webers had had its AOL account yanked because drunken bar
patrons were using too much profanity on-line. Oh my...
