New cfadm trainees wanted Mark Unseen   Mar 15 15:11 UTC 1995

In the hopes of spreading around Grex tasks to more people (and
lessening the load on the few people who have a lot of tasks), I'm
planning to pass the job of primary cfadm (conference administrator)
back to John Remmers when next week's agora re-start is complete.
I'll stay on as a backup cfadm, which is the role John is currently
filling. Overall, I'd like to see more people involved in running Grex,
because I think it makes for a healthier system. We would like to take
on one or two "apprentice" cfadm people, who could possibly one day
be rotated in as the primary cfadm.

John has written a set of very helpful instructions for cfadm tasks.
(My copy is in the file /u/popcorn/userinfo/cfadm.z -- a gzipped file
that you can read with zmore or zcat). Basically, the cfadm needs to
be comfortable with basic unix commands, such as the ones to create a
directory, or copy and edit a file. A good candidate will also have
lots of personal integrity, and the persistence to keep up with the
item in the coop conference where people request new conferences.

The new cfadm trainee(s) will be chosen at the next board meeting,
which is on Wednesday March 22. If you're interested in becoming a
cfadm trainee, please enter a response here by the end of the day
on Tuesday March 21.

I suppose I could do this, although I do tend to be pretty busy at
work.

 Sounds interesting. I volunteer.

I'll throw my hat in, as long as reading Agora isn't absolutely
required. >8)

I'd love to do it. (And as you can probably tell, I have way too much
free time on my hands. Maybe this will help me shed some of the excess
time. 8*)

i'd volunteer, but i think that would be a disaster...i think that if i can't
even manage to handle my own account properly, or know what to do with it,
just imagine what i could do with everybody elses! :)

hmmm.. I wouldn't venture to say that I have enough unix under my
belt yet.. although thank you for the opportunity, popcorn!

I've been hanging out here for about 3 yrs. I have 1 AT&T Unix manual
and Unix for Dummies. Can't say I'm a master of it, but I do understands
it.

I volunteer, somewhat tentatively.

It amazes me how some job postings evoke a *lot* more interest
than other ones.

It seems virtual jobs (fw, cfadm, helpers) are more popular than jobs
requiring real-world activities (publicity coord, jcc sale coord).

Virtual jobs require less pervious experience than real-world jobs,
by and large. I probably know most of what I need to know to be
a cfadm, for instance, but buggered if I know anything about replacing
a CPU card in the Sun we're running on.

Or maybe we're just a bunch of software geeks, and very few of us
know much about hardware.

Or maybe it's easier for us to fool ourselves into thinking we
know this stuff. >8)

But, organizing the JCC sale or becoming the publicity coordinator
take even less Unix experience than being a cfadm. I'm thinking it's
either a perceived "glamor" thing, or the fact that you can sit at your
computer to do the on-line tasks from the comfort of your own home.
That's where we Grexers are happiest, after all. :)

I think that there's an obvious reason as to why I didn't volunteer to be
JCC organizer or the publicity coordinator.

Yes, and without a car, I'm just as incapable of doing those things
as nephi is... Obviously, anybody who's here can be cfadm or
such.

I volunteer to be a cfadm trainee. I think it would be fun.

Whic brings up a good point...is anybody organizing the JCC sale, which
is only a week away?

STeve volunteered to do it. And I sent him e-mail yesterday to remind him.

The main difference between the "virtual" jobs and the "real" ones is that
the virtual ones are a lot less time-dependant. You probably can't get a
lot done as JCC sale coordinator after midnight.

response 19 of 38: Mark Unseen   Mar 21 01:45 UTC 1995

The Unix experience I've got. The experience organizing something like a
JCC sale, so far as I've got it, has been uniformly disastrous. Easy to
see which one to volunteer for.

I'd say helmke has the whole of it.

response 21 of 38: Mark Unseen   Mar 21 07:35 UTC 1995

Hmmmm, i would like to be able to inch myself up the local
responsibility ladder, and learn some more about cfadm'ing. This
level of Unix I have under control. Therefore, just under the
wire, I also volunteer to be a cfadm trainee.

Wow! Lots of qualified volunteers!
carl
response 23 of 38: Mark Unseen   Mar 21 11:17 UTC 1995

I've got some experience with Unix and am currently taking a
class in it. I've got the basics down and am starting to learn
commands that I haven't even heard of online.

response 24 of 38: Mark Unseen   Mar 21 21:15 UTC 1995

I would volunteer, but it sounds like there are already enough qualified
people.
