The board meeting will be on Wednesday November 15 at 7pm, probably at
ITI, but that's not yet confirmed. (If we do meet there, we will go out of
our way to be sure the door is unlocked this time, unlike last month's
meeting.) The public is welcome.

This meeting is a week earlier than our usual fourth Wednesday, because of
the Thanksgiving holiday.

Come to think of it: Do we want to meet at 7:30 instead of 7:00?
Several people have mentioned difficulty getting to ITI by 7:00,
and I don't think we have all that much Stuff to talk about anyway.

Should the deceased users policy be on the agenda?

response 3 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 9 18:08 UTC 1995

I'd prefer if that were buried.....

I have tickets to hear Purcell works the evening of 15 November, and
nothing stands in the way of listening to Purcell "live".

The deceased users policy was tabled at the last meeting, so
yes, it should be on the agenda.

does Popcorn really have her own gavel? I always thought it would be
neat to have a gavel!

response 6 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 10 02:46 UTC 1995

Actually, it's Grex's gavel. Mike Smerza bought it for John Remmers, back
when he was chair of the board, with the understanding that the gavel would
be passed on along with the office of Chair of the Board.

Re deceased users: Ok, I'll add that to the agenda.

Re change in meeting date: Hm. Rane, I think there are more people who can't
attend the next week's meeting than can't attend on the 15th. What time is
Purcell speaking at?

I searched (not manually) 2400 lines of e-mail text and headers to find it,
but I DID find it: we discussed whther Grex should trademark the name of its
newsletter (once it hads been decided).

_Tafelmusik_ is *performing* Purcell starting at 8 pm in Rackham Auditorium.

The text of the proposed deceased users policy should be posted here so
everyone will know what will be considered. If any policy is considered
seriously, I would be very glad if someone amended it to not deprive
*living* users from also establihsing "living wills" for the retirement
of their login ID in the event they die while holding a Grex account.
Certainly, if acquaintances of a user will be entitled to act to
retire login ID, living users themselves should be just as entitled to
specify the disposal of their login IDs (either way - that it will not
be retired, or it will).

One proposal we will be considering (but not necessaily the only one)
is mine from early in the "deceased user" item. I will attempt to be
very specific:

Proposed: That staff honor any request to permanently reserve the
account name of any account that had belonged to a Grex user who
dies.

Note: It is not my intention to put any specific language with respect
to how this is verified. I leave that to staff's discretion, but it is
not to be unreasonably denied.

Note: I specifically did not mention any language about who may issue
the request. In fact I think anyone should be able to issue the request.

Note: There is no time limit after death during which the request
must be made.

Lets not debate the merits of this proposal here. We have already got an item
for that.

<remmers bites tongue>

(Steve, could you please copy over response #9 to that item, so as
to focus discussion?)

response 11 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 10 22:38 UTC 1995

There has been no discussion in that item for over a week, but your
suggestion is a good one. I have copied the central parts of #9
into item 106. Maybe there will be more discussion there.

I would like to ask that the date of the following board meeting be chosen
at each board meeting. I take my board responsibilities seriously, and
would like to attend all board meeting, which I had done until the past
two. In those cases the board meeting date was just announced. I indicated
that I would not be able to attend, but there was no effort made to find a
date that would be acceptable to all board members. Board meetings are
required only every two months so there is considerable scheduling
flexibility. On other occasions, other board members may find themselves
in the position I have found myself. Therefore I believe it would be a
more orderly procedure to attempt to schedule a board meeting at a
previous meeting, where everyone's personal schedules can be properly
considered.

This is a reasonable request. We can do it online, too, providing
we leavve ourselves enough time.

response 14 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 18 21:53 UTC 1995

The October meeting was on its regularly scheduled day.
Sorry about changing the November meeting out from under you.

Speaking of changing meeting dates: the next meeting would normally
be on December 27. I can make that date, but I'd guess it's a difficult
choice of day for other board members, who might be vacationing then.

response 15 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 19 18:19 UTC 1995

I will be in Florida on 27 December. Maybe this is the time to adopt
the "bimonthly" board meetings provision.

response 16 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 20 07:15 UTC 1995

I can make that date, but in light of the problems that other people are
likely to have with it, maybe we could do it a week earlier again?

If we skip a December meeting, then the meeting we just had was
the last for several long-time board members.

20 December is open for me, for a Board Meeting and Retirement Party..

Seems to work for me too.

response 22 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 21 12:48 UTC 1995

As of this very second, 12/20 is fine with me.
popcorn
response 23 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 21 13:07 UTC 1995

So, we know that 12/20 works for: danr, popcorn, rcurl, remmers, and steve.
I *think* it works for scg, since he suggested it.
We don't know yet about srw.

response 24 of 28: Mark Unseen   Nov 22 21:04 UTC 1995

I made a temporary 2-day visit to the real world, but now I am back in
cyberspace, and I can attest to the fact that the 20th is fine with me, too.
