motd donation ads
|
Oct 25 03:50 UTC 1995 |
This item is to discuss whether we should put a regular membership
or donation plug in the "motd" (message of the day) that's displayed
when people log in. Some options might be: have a permanent plug, or
include it one week a month, or have a plug that changes every now
and then. Also, if we want a plug that varies, what suggestions do
people have for a 2 or 3 liner, that's effective or witty or just
plain strange? :-)

Maybe we could set up the fortune program to give a different plug every time
somebody logs in. ;)

I like having a plug there. I think it is better if it changes from time
to time.
"Think Globally, act Grexily. Send in your support. Type !support"
Grex runs on funds. Become a member and keep it running. Type !support.
Help us pay for the cost of running this system. It doesn't take much.
Type !support for detaials.
I like the 1 liners better than anything more complex.
One week on 2 weeks off might be good, too.

If it says "Think Globally, act Grexily", I might *withdraw*
my support. :)

What we need, is not so much a message asking for people to join, as a
message explaining breifly how Grex works. We've found that a great deal of
the people who log in and just use party or even a lot of the conference
users, seems to think that Grex has outside funding or is local/state
goverenment supported. "Your tax dollars at work." A revolving series
of messages that let people know that we are only funded by user donations
and we have *no* outside funding would help a great deal I think.

"Grex is funded entirely by donations from people like you. Enter !support
to see how you can help." But that runs to *2* lines.
BTW, it might be a good idea to have a link from !support to support ...

Grex is user-supported. Please consider donating. Type !support to learn how.

As long as it is in the motd on an intermittant basis, thats OK.
Like 3 days in, and maybe 7 out, something like that, which does
not continue on even week boundaries.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself well. What I mean is that things
should not start or stop on the same day each week. There are
various patterns that people have for usage of Grex; some are
weekday users, some weekend or a mixture. We don't want to
impact, or avoid a set of people somehow because of how the 'duty
cycle' of the ad works.
Make a little more sense now?

Ahh, yes, I agree. What do you think of showing a message every
other week (for a week), so the maintainer edits motd the same day
every week?
In theory, I like scg's suggestion of a fortune-like program to
vary the message more, or to not display the message to members.
But an extra program could slow logging in, especially when grex
bogs down, while inclusion in the motd file wouldn't slow it down
much (I think).
(Btw, adbarr, I like your pet-threatening suggestion. :)

I think the period should be less than a week of showing. There
is something of a psychological factor here of making it not too
often. I think that people might complain more if the notice was
up for an entire week.

Re #4 and above: Could we have a program runnig as a daemon that changes the
MOTD, say, once or twice a day? The way the automatic birthday-wisher works?
I agree with Greg's idea of having a statement that Grex is run by member
contributions, and not funded by the government. As long as we don't start
to annoy people the way PBS does with their pledge drives. I'd be inclined
to keep the percentage of time the message appears low; say 25%, at least
until people get used to it.
"Who supports Grex? People like you, and no one else! Type !support for info."

It appears that my terrible slogan has brought out some excellent alternatives.
I would think that 1 week per month would be good. Run a different one
each month. We now have an item full of good slogans. (keep 'em coming)

Hey, I liked "act grexily" :-)...many good suggestions...I didn't think
such good one-liners would occur.
If we put the messages in the regular motd, putting them in the party motd
would have a redundant redundancy, unless tailored to the party crowd, no?

re #19, definitely. I think there are probably a lot of regular partiers
who don't conference and have no idea how Grex is funded.

thje cycle in #9 werkx for me - the rotating of several one-liners also
werkx for me ... make it work for Grex in motd as well as party (although
there might be differnces.

Well, we should probably make it active, and creative... And we should be able
to nuke it for a day if motd bloat is a problem. I love the idea.

Yes, definite keep it out if we have 18 others things that day.
I think the idea should be that it gets lower prio than other
things, in keeping with our low key approach to things.
