Nominations for Cyberspace Communications Board of Directors Mark Unseen   Oct 14 12:28 UTC 1995

The time of the annual election for the Cyberspace Communications
Board of Directors is close at hand. According to the Bylaws (see
Item 2 in Coop for details), nominations close on November 15,
with the election being held via online vote from December 1
through December 15. Term of office begins on January 1 and is
for two years. To be eligible to run for and serve on the Board,
you must be a member in good standing who has paid at least three
months' membership dues.
Four Board members' terms expire at the end of this year. Three
of them--STeve Andre (steve), John Remmers (remmers), and Dan
Romanchik (danr)--will have served two consecutive terms and thus
will not be eligible to run this time. The fourth, Rane Curl (rcurl),
can run for reelection.
Use this item to enter nominations for the Board. Before nominating
someone, you should confirm that the person is eligible and interested
in serving. Self-nomination is permitted.

(Psst, bruin, scg is already a board member, and will be
until next year...)

response 3 of 190: Mark Unseen   Oct 14 15:56 UTC 1995

Thanks for lettimg me know robh. By the way, besides the board members who
are ineligible because of their tenure, you may want to list those who are
on the board through 1996.

I hereby withdraw scg from nomination.

response 4 of 190: Mark Unseen   Oct 14 16:26 UTC 1995

Those on the board through 1996 are popcorn, srw, and me.

Also, phenix and llanarth aren't members, and as such are inelligable. I'll
second the nomination of scott, though.

Nominations of phenix & llanarth are withdrawn.

Is there any way I could access the active membership roster (to avoid further
embarrassment when making nominations)?

Yes. Type !members.

I dont believe in term limits! Amend the bylaws to let these guys run
for another term! They do a great job!

Without a fresh perspective, the Board would stagnate.
Which is why the term limits are there.

The term limits built into the Grex bylaws by the founders was
the attempt to make sure that we won't stagnate. Change yes,
stagnate no.

Having been on the board for the entire life of Grex so far,
it's going to be an interesting feeling, stepping down. I'm
glad though, that we've hit this milestone in our history,
becuase it means that we succeeded! We're still here after
four years, and going into our fifth.

I'm in the same boat as STeve and feel just about the same way.

(Also, I'd remind folks that before nominating someone, they should
check with the person to make sure they're eligible and interested.)

For future reference: The board members whose terms are NOT
expiring this year are Steve Gibbard (scg), Valerie Mates
(popcorn), and Steve Weiss (srw).

I reject this notion that just because Steve and Remmers have served
two consecutive terms, they have become stale and have no new ideas.
The whole idea of term limits is unamerican. If someone wants to run
for office, this is a free country and they should be allowed to do so.

Have fun amending the bylaws, kerouac! 8-)

David, could not the bylaws be amended to provide that if a member of
the board does get stagnant the corporation would provide for daycare?

Kerouac, there's a built-in way that members can change anything about Grex.
I don't have the exact procedure in front of me, but basically you need to
be a member and enter an item in co-op requesting a change in the rules
(ie. no term limits). People discuss the proposed change for something like
10(?) days. Then you enter the final wording of what people are going to vote
on. And then people vote for 10 days. If your proposal passes, it becomes
part of the rules the system runs by.

(For what it's worth, though, my personal opinion is that the term limits on
Grex's board members are a good idea.)

A suggestion for listing members: type "!members | fmt" to fit the whole list
of members on your screen. "!members" alone produces a listing that is
90-something lines long.

I checked with Scott, and he is willing to run. So I third the nomination.
Am still checking with several other people.

response 17 of 190: Mark Unseen   Oct 15 05:16 UTC 1995

My fellow Grexers, I have been given the honor tonight of placing
before this convention the name of an honored and distinguished member,
long active in conferences both as contributor and fair-witness,
recently appointed to staff and placed in charge of those files that
define our fair community to web-surfers around the globe. Ladies and
gentlemen, honored nonprimate organic entities, esteemed artificial
intelligences, venerated creatures of fiction, and anybody else, I am
proud to nominate for your consideration in this year's campaign for
the Cyberspace Commmunications Board of Directors: <looks at script>
Bob Handelson!

[Sorry, that should be Rob (robh) Henderson.]

Bravo nestene!

<grexers cheer enthusiastically as the virtual balloons drop>

I hereby second the nomination of robh.

response 20 of 190: Mark Unseen   Oct 15 07:42 UTC 1995

I third it.

(I should also note that I was laughing not at the nomination, but at the
nominating speech. I think robh would make an excellent board member).

response 21 of 190: Mark Unseen   Oct 15 10:48 UTC 1995

(Just to add one piece of clarification to the term limit discussion
above: The limit applies only to *consecutive* terms. STeve, Dan, and
myself will all be eligible to run again next year, for two more
consecutive terms, if we want to.
I helped write that rule and am in favor of it. However, others may
disagree, and any member can propose a bylaws change--see the bylaws
text in item 2 for how to do it. It involves entering a discussion
item in coop proposing an amendment. In any case, if anyone feels
inclined to discuss this issue, I'd suggest moving the discussion to
a new item so that this one can focus on nominating board candidates.)

personal use>
