October 8 JCC sale participation
|
Sep 23 13:46 UTC 1995 |
John asked in item 102 if the board wants to participate in the Oct. 8
JCC sale. I'd like to suggest that if Grex wants to participate, we get
two tables. We have more than enough stuff to fill five; two sales ago,
when some vendors didn't show up, we did just that. The last sale, most
of the hardware didn't show up, and we still had enough to comfortably
fill two tables (though it was fairly manageable with one, since we were
on a row's end, without adjacent neighbors).
Reasons for a second table:
It's messy and a bit embarrassing to make such a mess when your stuff
overflows into the aisles or your neighbors tables.
Stuff that's harder to access is less likely to sell (e.g., stuff tucked
under the table, vertically-stacked books, unopened boxes). A second
table could mean we'll make more money and have less stuff to cart back.
I'd also suggest that if the board wants to stop doing JCC sales, that we
go to one last sale, to try and sell everything we can at really-cheap (or
free) prices, to try to find good homes for the JCC things being stored.
The last sale was disappointing, but I think that was due to the time of
year (most vendors were disappointed), and we didn't have much hardware.
These are addressed in the upcoming sale, and I think we'll do quite well.

I seem to remember that the primary objections last time JCC was discussed
were about the JCC's objections to "X-rated" software, or seomthing like that,
and some pledge not to sell that sort of thing. I personally see no reason
to let that stand in our way, esp since holding on to this stuff is NOT going
to benefit us nearly as much as selling it, and putting our name before the
public at the same time.
Just my $.02

Well, given that attending at least one more JCC sale is the only
way to get this junk out of my apartment, I'm all in favor of it. >8)
(For those who don't know, I have seven boxes of computer equipment
which were donated to Grex to be sold at a JCC sale.)

(Ok, I confess, I have a similar (but smaller) ulterior motive: 3 boxes. :-)

I was more uncomfortable with the JCC's rule about being able to exclude
"objectionable persons" or something like that than I was about the ban on
X rated software. Given that Grex does need the money, oney, I don't see any
of their rules as a reason to boycott, unless they start enforcing them in
a really objectionable way. I think it's probably a good thing to go to this
JCC sale, both for the money and to get the stuff out of peoples' houses and
apartments. I think John should go ahead and rent the table.

I think John should rent the table, too. I have no objection whatever
to the JCC policy.
I think one big problem we had at the last sale was getting volunteers
to man the booths. If we can do that, this sale has the potential of
raising more money for Grex than any other source except membership dues.

Money talks <and pays bills, and fillets, juliennes..>..
Just keep an eye on the JCC to make sure they don't get too much
more rules-mongering, and go SELL! <like I have clout, heh.>

For those in favor of renting a table - any opinion on renting two tables?

As I said in the other item: I'm also in favor of being at the JCC sale.
I don't have any strong leaning one way or the other on the two tables
question. The second table is more money out of Grex's pocket, but it
sounds like it could potentially pay for itself.
At some point we were looking for a JCC coordinator. Rob (ajax) said to
me recently that maybe he might consider accepting this position. Rob,
may I nominate you to be Grex's official JCC coordinator person?
I think you'd do a great job of it!

Okay, three Board members have endorsed JCC participation, so
with my yes vote, that makes four--a majority. I'll also vote
in favor of renting two tables, but so far only two other
board members have said they're in favor. If one more says so
in this item, I'll go to the JCC tomorrow (Monday) and rent
two tables, otherwise just one.
I realize this is just a straw poll of board members and that
you could all change your minds when an official vote is
taken at the board meeting, in which case I'd be out the table
rental, but I don't think you'd do something dastardly like
that. :)

If those who know what they're talking about favor renting two tables I'll
support it, but never having been to a JCC sale and not having seen the amount
of stuff we have to sell, I can't very well from an independant opinion on
that.

And another. I think there should be a "committee" making this decision:
if they have enough stuff and staff to make some money for Grex, they
should be authorized to set up shop at JCC - and at any other sale they
wish. I don't think the board should have to reconsider - and guess at the
outcome - each time JCC comes up. Let's give the both the responsibility
and authority to some members/supporters.

Some of the stuff could be auctioned off here. You may also want to consider
the Chelsea amateur radio swap held early every summer.

No, I'm not volunteering. Its my job as a board member to support,
encourage, even find, volunteers (actually, I'm already volunteered
to the hilt, and beyond...).

I'm not sure exactly where to post this, but... My office upgraded a bunch
of computer equipment recently, and yesterday they got rid of a bunch of old
equipment. I picked up several slow 386 SX cpus for Grex. They don't have
keyboards or monitors, and few have hard drives. I also picked up some 20
megabyte hard drives, and a handful of 2400 baud modems. Also assorted
motherboards, and a pile of other cards that I'm not sure what they do.
Rob (ajax) is going to stop by my office this evening to haul away whatever
looks sellable at a future JCC sale. There are a few more even slower CPUs
and other assorted things that we can walk off with, too.

I picked up this load tonight. Thanks for the donation! "Few" is a
relative term here...around 15 cases and 25 motherboards. I think there
were four 2400 baud modems with power adapters, and four or so monitors
(three go with thin diskless network PCs). I'll mail staff a list of
things that look possibly useful for Grex itself (Marcus recently sent a
helpful list of things Grex could use), though most of it is likely to
go to the JCC sale in March. I don't think much will be good for "rehab"
PCs, due to keyboard/monitor absence. Also short on apartment space
(already had six full PCs stored), so testing/working on stuff is hard
(piles are stacked high). The only thing I didn't take was a '286
"server" from the days when servers were made of inch-thick cast bronze.
It was heavier than any non-mainframe has a right to be. Though now
that I think of it, it would probably look right at home in the dungeon;
we could take bets on which computer would fall through the floor first!

There are a lot of motherboards, including several 386 16MHz to
25 MHz, and maybe a 33MHz, but all SIMMs have been removed. However,
there are four pre-SIMM 386DX20 boards with 36 socketed chips, and 36
empty sockets. If each has 4 megs (I'm hoping they do; the chips say
"M5M41000BP 0022E55-8"), they might be combined to make two 8 meg
motherboards, which is the minimum Marcus suggested might find a
useful purpose in the dungeon. Will test them soon. There are also
some serial cards; I think the board minutes mentioned Grex could
use one.

Oh, sure. The strangest things go there. The hard part is
getting all the people there, etc. But I think we have a person
to do that now, so it should be more organized.
