Needed For The Move Mark Unseen   Jan 8 15:32 UTC 1995

Can you help Grex? Here is a list of stuff Grex will need for the move:

1) Loans of lots of skunky old blankets we can use to wrap things in,
to protect them in transit.

2) Donation of a garbage can for the dungeon.

3) Several volunteers with food donations on moving day (January 22nd, 1994)
    * At 8am, we need someone to bring warm beverages and some food.
    * At noon we could use 2 people to work together to bring in lunch.
    * A midafternoon snack would be nice, though I think the other two
slots are more critical to fill.

4) Loans of paintbrushes, rollers, and trays. We will be using latex
paint, so I'm told these will wash clean.

5) It would be Really Cool (though it's not very urgent) if we could find
someone with artistic tendencies who would be willing to paint a mural on
the dungeon walls. Talk to STeve Andre about this: he has some interesting
ideas.

6) Grex may need the donation of a tape rack.

7) Hopefully Grex will have its neat new backup system in place before the
move. However, just in case this doesn't work out, it would be very
helpful if someone could loan us an 8mm tape drive to use for the weekend
when we move, to prevent needing to do at VeryManyHour backup on Grex's
current system.

8) We could still use a few more people to do the actual moving. If you're
free on January 22nd, please yell!

If you can fill any of these needs, please either enter a response here or
send me e-mail. THANKS!!!

What about furniture? I've been told that there could be a problem
moving the desk into the dungeon.

We want to dismantle the parts of Grex not needed for the backups
early on Sunday morning, so that we can take advantage of more hours
of access to the CE Warehouse. Then the backups can begin while a lot
of the stuff that needs to be moved can be labeled, loaded and moved.

We are not going to move the desk into the dungeon.
I am donating a table (which served as a desk when I was a grad student).
It is 5 feet long and 30 inches deep, very sturdy, formica topped, and
the legs can be detached for moving.

STeve and Carl are obtaining pallets, to keep equipment off the floor, too.

I'd be willing to bring cookies and coffee for a midafternoon
snack! How many people will I need to cover and where do I
need to go?

Re 1: If we have someone bring a warm beverage and munchies, would
that work, or would it make sense to do a full breakfast at a real
restaurant? More food might lead to better work for the morning....

Re 4: Thanks! Good question. I'd say figure on about 10 or 12 people
to feed. I'll e-mail you info about the best places to find us.
In the afternoon, I think a cold beverage (juice?) might work better
than a warm one, as people will have been hauling things around all
day, or they'll be sitting in the heated basement of the dungeon
reassembling things. Thanks!!!

Another thing Grex needs: Could someone donate a bar of soap, something
to put it in, and an old towel or two? I'm forever wanting to wash my
hands at the sink in the dungeon, only to find I'm lacking soap and a
towel. I'm sure I'm not the only one....

I'll donate a bar of soap, soap dish, (or if you prefer, a pump of
softsoap), and a couple of old towels. Let me know if you'd like them
moving day, or I could get them to you before then.

Hm. I'm going to have to capture that list of items. Excuse me.

Okay.. it's captured.. let me see what I can come up with <albeit,
        being
in Southfield *does* make logistics a bit cumbersome..>

I can loan a blanket and one paintbrush. Where are movers meeting on the 22nd?
And what size trashcan is needed?

Couple of items:
1.) Steve and I talked about this last night. I'm not crazy about using
pallets for the equipment. They're made of wood, not very tall, and
they are big. They will make a trip hazard in the Dungeon. For the
Sun 3/260, I'm going to put it on top of 2 plastic Milk crates. They're
very strong and exactly the right size for the Sun.
2.) It might be possible to dismatle the desk that's at CE. If it can be,
we might take it to the dungeon after all.
3.) I'm going to be mounting shelving and a phone panel on the wall. I'd
hate to have someone paint a nice mural on the wall right where I
have to mount the phone panel. We'll have to figure this one out.
4.)If we can't get an Exabyte tape drive, we still won't need to
use the 1600bpi magtape. I told Steve last night that I have an Archive
2150 SCSI tape drive that takes 250meg tapes. If Grex will front a
small portion of the cost of the tapes, I'll loan the drive for this
    effort.

I'd like for us to meet at a resturaunt if possible. If not, thats OK.
I'll waddle off somewheres beforehand.
Greg had an idea thats pretty good: we can use milk cartons, in place
of the pallets for the Sun. It will provide better protection in case
we get a flood, and, it will provide for easier access to the cards in the
back so staff don't have to quite bend over any more. ;-)
So, if you have some spare milk cartons, speak up. All thats important
is that they are the same size.

Kinda off the subject but Grex will be down during the move correct?

response 14 of 130: Mark Unseen   Jan 9 05:24 UTC 1995

Heh, no actually we were planning on buying several miles of phone wire and
several hundred extension cords that will trail out of the back of the
truck. What do you think???

response 15 of 130: Mark Unseen   Jan 9 06:05 UTC 1995

The schedule (as it is now taking shape) is that Grex will go down pretty
early on Sunday. It will come up when it's ready. That could be any time
from late Sunday afternoon (wildly optimistic) to late Monday afternoon
(awfully pessimistic). If we can't get dual service working for the
phones, it certainly won't come back before the Ameritech work gets done
on Monday. We'll have a better idea about that in a few days, I hope.

I hope to be able to help, but it sounds like its getting crowded.
Would a hand-cart-wagon (like we used to move gear for JCC) help?
I could help provide ham (radio) communication, if that would be useful.
I have paint trays (2) and rollers and an edger, I could provide.
steve
response 17 of 130: Mark Unseen   Jan 9 06:34 UTC 1995

The ham part might well be useful Rane. Ya never know when communications
will come in handy. Today at the dungeon I talked to Marc via ham radio for
some stuff, so it does useful stuff.

Let me know what would be most useful. It looks like I may be able
to be available during most if not all of the move. I can be mobile,
portable, or base.

Karen - thanks for the soap and towels. The softsoap sounds less messy
than a bar of soap, so I guess that's first choice. Bringing these over
on moving day would be fine.

Mark (aruba) - Thanks for the blanket and paintbrush. Could you get them
to me during the week, or, at the latest, at next Saturday's walk?
On the 22nd we'll either be meeting at CE or at breakfast someplace near
there, yet to be decided.
My suggested size for the trashcan is about 1 foot in diameter and
18 inches tall, but that's a very rough guesstimate, and pretty much any
size (smaller than big outdoor trash barrels) should do.

Greg - Thanks for the loan of the tape drive. Ideally I'd like to see Grex
have its own new tape drive before moving day, but if not, I'm glad yours
is available.

Peacefrg - Yes, Grex will be down during the move. :(

Rane - The hand-cart could potentially be very useful, though probably
too rough a ride for a number of things. Could you bring it by CE some
time before the move? Thanks!

I assume that by milk cartons, Steve means milk crates?
steve
response 21 of 130: Mark Unseen   Jan 10 00:28 UTC 1995

Thats right. Milk cartons, the plastic or paper kind, would hold
Grex up for about 4 seconds, and then crumble... ;-)

How about the old metal milk crates? We might have a few laying
around in the barn. I'll go look tomarrow.

response 23 of 130: Mark Unseen   Jan 10 03:21 UTC 1995

Oh yeah, and I have 2 milk crates I can loan Grex too. And another
blanket.

response 24 of 130: Mark Unseen   Jan 10 03:33 UTC 1995

Actually, I'd prefer the plastic kind. They are very strong, they won't rust,
and they make good insulators.
