Grex Convention Mark Unseen   Dec 28 06:39 UTC 1994

Let's discuss a serious plan to make a GRX Convention sometime in the Spring.
With the wide array of talents and resources on this freenet we can do this.
Let's start with some general ideas.

What would you like it to be?

I guess I'm thinking of it being a social type gathering, which
I think would be cool. If planned far enough ahead, various folks
could offer crash space maybe.
So, thats my idea of a Grex convention. Kinda like a SF con, but
perhaps more weird.
                                           ;-)

I agree. We could even have some entertainment there. Like a Professional
Magician maybe :)

Steve That's exactly what I was thinking of. MAybe have a class in neat-o UNIX
stuff too. Peace......you worry me sometimes : ) .

I worry a lot of people sometimes...Yeah we could have classes and lectures
and if we did it in Ann Arbor, we could see how grex is run. That would be
really cool for us non-hacker, non-computer technitian who want to be
computer technitian types.
I hope that steve sees this and takes it seriously.

in the spring?!?

scg and I have actually discussed such a thing. besides time and money,
we couldn't think of any drawbacks. Maybe we can find someone willing
to part with large sums of money. YOu know, a fool.

Yeh. The fund raising for the event should be discussed in parallel with
any other related stuff.

Maybe we could use Carson's new idea for Grex trading cards to raise money?!?

Lot of good ideas. The organization and finace concerns would be minimal if
(DAMN LINE NOISE) we could get the GREX users to volunteer for
certain duties. I would be willing to organize the event, since that's what I
do anyway. (WOW....I'm surprised that #5 supports an idea from a 'newbie')
ROFLMAO!
I love it when the truth is told!
Let's keep the ideas coming. In spite of what you may think this doesn't have
to be a major production. We can do this with existing resources.

Can we link this item to coop? They might want to have their input too?

This item has been linked to the Co-op conference.

I'm glad this was linked to a conference I actually read, this is
great! It doesn't have to be expensive, depending on how large
it is. We could offer classes on all the things about Grex that
confuse people the most. Hmm, I wonder who we'd ask to lead these
classes... >8)

Wouldn't renting a hall be expensive...anyone have a line on inexpensive
space for a day or two?

Non-profits and community organizations can sponge off of some local business
sometimes like a bank or something or how about a park/camp?
steve
response 14 of 259: Mark Unseen   Dec 29 04:38 UTC 1994

We can rent a tent for a local park, if nothing else. I did that
a few years ago--the cost was $80 and about 35 people split the cost.
peacefrg
response 15 of 259: Mark Unseen   Dec 29 09:39 UTC 1994

We don't even need to rent a tent. For 80.00 bucks we can buy a huge
tarp and just go to a campground or something. Plus, Township halls are
cheap. At least up here they are. I would love to take some classes
on UNIX commands. There are none offered anywhere up here. This convention
idea is great. Thanks Kenn.

A convention would be very cool, however I'm not not sitting
in a tent or a tarp until at least may!

If we hold a Grex fest under a tent.... Nothing personal, but...
'civillians' are bound to mistake it for the circus coming into town
unannounced.
steve
response 18 of 259: Mark Unseen   Dec 30 18:27 UTC 1994

Well, we accept "cilillians" when they stumble onto Grex via
the net, so it would be in the Grex tradition of being open to
accept folks as they stumbled by the tent.

Wolfmage had a wonderful idea last night. Up here in Gaylord we have a lot
of nice resorts that give you a huge conferance room if you have them cater
your convention. 200.00$ minimum. That might be a serious option to discuss.
I hope this happens because I would love to go to a Grex convention.

re #17 - that wouldn't be a mistake - we are already arrived!
steve
response 21 of 259: Mark Unseen   Dec 30 19:25 UTC 1994

Thats a neat idea, doing it in Gaylord.

Which week is it that you don't have snow?
wolfmage
response 22 of 259: Mark Unseen   Dec 30 20:25 UTC 1994

Because of my business I have several contacts with various resort properties
up here. One of the great adventures to any convention is the travelling
aspect and seeing new territory. Gaylord is only about 3 hours from Detroit
and believe it or not...we have beautiful Spring weather. (Maybe even work
in a round or two of golf on one of our championship courses)
As I said earlier I will gladly organize this and I expect that several
of our GREX family will pitch in as well. If there's enough response I will
begin making calls this week for the best rates and deals in the Northern
Michigan area. However, as winter passes I will have to return to my
business work, so the bulk of the planning must be accomplished by March.

Don't worry about the locals thinking the circus is coming to town.
They heard the calliope playing as our moving truck pulled into town.
KEEP THE IDEAS COMING! I LOVE THIS PLACE!

What a great idea! I hereby volunteer to organize the educational aspect of the
con. I will gather ideas and suggestions for classes, and organize the teaching
talent. So leave ideas here for what you would like to see/learn, or e-mail me
at otterwmn@cyberspace.org Hope to see you all soon!

I think it's a +really+ bad idea to have the convention out of town. The
cost of driving x 200 people would greatly offset any savings by doing it in
the boonies. The idea of driving 3 hours each way is loathsome.
