The latest board candidates opinions (concise)
|
Dec 27 15:54 UTC 1994 |
The board elections are closing in and I saw some opinions scattered
here and there. So, here is a place for all you candidates to put your
opinions where the general population can find them. Please be concise ;-)

If you think a longer explanation is needed, please direct the readers
to the area for long explanations so this item will be easy to read from
beginning to end. Thanks.

Well, I don't know how good it is to have two different items
where we're supposed to offer opinions, that's just going to
make things more confusing.
Things I'd like Grex to do - Offer some kind of public service
for the local (Ann Arbor area) community, though I'm not sure what.
Chris Bartlett's idea of providing an index to goverment information
on the Internet sounds good. On a related note, I'd like to see
Grex offer more Internet access to non-paying members, such as
World-Wide Web access, though I know this may never be feasible
with our equipment and other resources.
Also, I'd like to find some way to increase the number of local
users on the system. Having people from all over the world visit
us is wonderful, of course, but we seem to be losing our local
"flavor" as a result.

I'm hoping the area for dissertations remains almost empty.

As much as I would like to draw clear distinctions between my position
and that of other candidates, there really is very little opportunity
to do so. I agree with everything robh posted in #2.
I am very anxious to get Grex moved into the dungeon so that we can add lines
for better local access. I will push for a terminal server so that
we can support higher speed lines. We also need a publicity chair to replace
Misti. The publicity committee should be functioning to increase local
interest in the system.
When the memberships new open access policy is placed in effect (soon, I hope),
gopher protocol will be opened to all. I think the membership intended to
include http protocol (for WWW browsing) as well, and I will work for the
opening of that too.
About the only place where I have parted company with some of the candidates is
over the desirablility of eventually opening ftp and telnet (and some other)
protocols to non-members. I believe these should be reserved so as to
encourage people to support the system.

so here.

Since few candidates have a concise statement, I'll make one.
Popcorn has my vote. She made a decision based on sound logic and acted on
it without discussion (cf agora 32). A tip of the hat and pat on the back.

You can see plenty of examples of my opinions in other items in this
conference (and other conferences), including the previous candidates'
forum item that was mentioned in a previous resonse. I'll enter some sort
of position statement here sometime in the next few days, after I finish
catching up from my week off Grex.

Goodness, I've been postponing this item forever, keeping up first with
things related to Grex's move, since I'm coordinating it. Also, I don't
have much more to say beyond what I said in item 28.
Ajax was working on a questionaire to send to all candidates, kind of
like the League of Women Voters. I think he said he's going to collect
answers from all the candidates, then tabulate and post them. That
might be helpful for folks who are still deciding who to vote for.
I know I'm having a hard decision. Every one of the candidates would make
a good board member, but there are four I REALLY want to vote for.
