LISTSERV for Grex?
|
Nov 27 08:21 UTC 1994 |
Should some LISTSERV functionality be added to Grex? It is a common
MailingList server, which would probably be too much for Grex to handle
with its current Inet link, but its GET function would be useful, and may
save some bandwidth. Briefly, GET allows a person to send e-mail to Grex
and request that a file be e-mailed back, and LISTSERV does this
automatically. For example, in some groups in which I participate, I might
offer access to some information in a file on Grex. I can just say, "send
e-mail to LISTSERV@cyberspace.org with the message GET <filename> ...".
So, instead of people sending e-mail to me, and me e-mailing them the
info, it is done with much somewhat less use of link (and my) time.
I anarchied the archives for listserv, and robh dowloaded and extracted
them, and they reside in /tmp/robh/listserv2. A README gives further
details, and setup files show the possible parameters.

"Add it to the list...." - but in this case, it is possible that
GET with LISTSERV would *relieve* the modei a bit. It would be a
question of how much current traffic is sending information in
response to requests, and how much new traffic would be generated
by making it easier. An example would be, that information about Grex
could be put on LISTSERV, so potential users could obtain it without
telnetting to Grex, which really hogs the link. How about an experimental
implementation (after we get the disk problem fixed - notice that I
have great confidence that it will be fixed!).
