Possible change in party
|
Nov 9 05:04 UTC 1994 |
When we gave closeable party channels names that end in _x, I don't
think anybody was thinking about a possible meaning you could read into
that name: X rated. I'm uncomfortable with this. Would it make sense
to change the name to something else, instead?

Sounds like an overreaction to me. I use X to mean a million different
things.

same here. In addition, I'd rather see them THERE than in the
regular channel.
Valerie! how'd you find out? ;)

(also, the "X" rating was done away with a few years ago and replaced with
the "NC-17" rating.)

Hmm, somehow channel_nc-17 doesn't seem right... >8)
I don't think people are seeing the name and thinking, "Hey,
it's an X-rated channel, we can talk about sex there!"
People are more likely saying, "I want to talk about sex,
where can I do that, oh yeah, a private channel!"
But seriously, what would you suggest? channel_p for
"private" would be fine with me.

popcorn, what was your original extension? I seem to
remember something else that could close channels.
something like "_canclose" or some other unwieldly
extension. since you're the party keeper, I'd hope
that if you did decide to remove the "_x" extension,
you would leave some sort of alternative extension.
'sides, no one uses the "_x!" extension but me. ;)

Fascinating mis-interpretation .... if something CAN be ....(etc.).
Yes, I would strongly suggest that the extention be altered away
from _x . _p is fine with me, fwiw.

I don't object either. I was only questioning the necessity.

I worry a little about making such a change now, after the _x has already
been established. It would proabbly confuse a lot of people who don't
follow this discussion.

Besides _p is too reminiscent of "pornography" :^)

"puberty" "philandering" "prostitution" "polygamy"
I question the need to change the extension too.

Now there is a topic for an Item: what "bad" word associations could
we find for each letter of the alphabet? Is there a "goodest" letter?

Are you restricted to a single letter following the underscore, or could
you require it to be a full word, such as "_private". That would remove
the ambiguity, at a cost of making creation of closed channels more
tedious.

Ja, originally it was _canclose, to indicate that the channel could
be closed, but I changed it to _x because it was easier to type.

Zing ..... Zex
at this point, the _private is the more rational from the point
of both non-confusion and positive-identification. Add to that
the little extra grief, which tends to discourgage, and things
are all pretty and happy again ...

associations... ;->.
