We had a pretty mediocre month in September. Membership revenue
was a little lower than the last couple of months, and a lot of
people decided not to renew. I'm a little concerned about that,
but not overly concerned. We'll just have to keep an eye on it.

If *YOU* want to support Grex, you can send cash, checks, or money
orders to:

Thanks for your support.

This item has been linked from Agora to Co-op.

Considering the problems grex has had, I'm not at all surprised that
ths month was mediocre, or that some people are declining to renew.

How come a check bounced?

Insufficient funds at the bank, I'd assume...

You are bound to have short-term members. All organizations do: you
get a big splurge in new members...and there naturally follows later
a splure of non-renewals. I would expect this for members that telnet
in from afar, since they have less personal participation (walks,
computer fair, etc). It is certainly something to watch and analyze,
since Grex has shifted into a different mode of operation with internet
access.

I'm sure, though, that the disk problems in the last month or so
have convinced a lot of people that Grex is not very reliable and
even though there's a lot of good things about Grex, paying someone
else for more reliable service might be a better deal. Not everyone
feels that way of course, and then there's the "regression toward the
mean" sort of phenomenon.

Right. Besides, anyone looking for just a "deal", should look elsewhere.

actually, one of the non-renewees that I know isn't happy with the
changes that Grex has undergone in its user base and clientele.

                                                Carson!

Do you have any specifics to convey? All sorts of people have all sorts
of reasons for being happy or unhappy about all sorts of things, but it
is interesting to learn what people think makes them happy or unhappy.

response 10 of 34: Mark Unseen   Oct 18 04:50 UTC 1994

he's generally dissatisfied with how "trendy" Grex has become. He yearns
for the days when people who logged in generally a) knew what they were
doing, b) were intelligent to talk to and discuss with, and c) knew
something about net etiquitte. I hate to mention his login without
consulting him first. I will say that we'd had long discussions about
whether he should renew or not, and that I couldn't come up with a
good reason why *he* should renew.

when my time is up, I'll be renewing for another year, BTW.

Heh. Gee, I thought *I* was intelligent to talk to, and practiced
netiquette. Oh well, sic transit gloria mundi. What I have noticed
from reasons given for leaving is that they are not likely to be the
real reasons, though of course anyone's reason is real enough to
them.

Quick question: were one to consider the membership, how full would
one's wallet need to be?

$6 per month or $60 per year. You can type "!support" at the next
prompt for full details, including how to pay.

I'm sorry to hear Caron's friend is already pinging for the good
old days of Grex. Grex's growth has changed things some, but not as
much as I'd thought it would. I still see lots of intellgient
discussions going on. Sure, there are less interesting ones too (from
my point of view) but a) we've always had them, b) who am I to say it
isn't good/intelligent/interesting?
With more people comes more of both the good and the bad. I think
its still fairly easy to focus on the good and mostly ignre what you
find bad.

What STeve said. I think Carson's friend is making much too hasty a
judgement. I'm somewhat sure I know who this is and, if I'm right,
he's talked about his concerns a little. Dunno what to say, except
that I disagree and that I miss his input in the conferences.
kentn
response 16 of 34: Mark Unseen   Oct 18 21:32 UTC 1994

Hmmm...I *don't* think carson's friend is being hasty at all. If
you know what you like and this ain't it, then there's no reason to
waste further time and money. It's easy to call the people who leave
lamers, but you'd be better off to find out why they left (what
they will tell you and what you can surmise), then either say "we
can live without those people" or work at making Grex better for
"those people".
I don't think you'll ever be able to please everyone, though.
You'll just have to accept that some people won't be satisfied with
change...

I will definitely be renewing when the time comes, tho the reliability problem
has been a real pain lately. I have been unable to get in via local dialup
2 mornings per week for the past 4 or 5 weeks straight. That's a bummer
since grexing is something I do every weekday morning over breakfast. I
hope things improve.

response 21 of 34: Mark Unseen   Oct 20 13:14 UTC 1994

I am optimistic about our chances to move soon and add to our dial hunt group.
We have 5 lines now because 1 modem is dead. We will be back to 6 when that
modem is reset or replaced, and up to 8 after the move when we switch to
Centrex service from Ameritech.

The last few weeks grex has been almost out of touch because of the downtime.
Is there a way we can purchase better software to secure the system better?

response 23 of 34: Mark Unseen   Oct 20 14:23 UTC 1994

We're going to do a test today that is going to help out a lot
in determining our problem. I'll enter all the details a little
later today.
