Crazy ntalk!!!!!!!!! Mark Unseen   Mar 10 01:42 UTC 1995

Uhmm, I'm entering this item about ntalk, ytalk, talk, etc.
The problem is: The damn thing hasn't ever worked! I talked to avi
about it, and he thinks that it was compiled wrong. I would like
to ask if a root, or staff member could fix this. I really
like ntalk, and i am frustrated!!!!

See crowd. See person stand. See person stand. See person say something.
Say something, person. See crowd nod in agreement. Listen to silence.

I was just talking to someone in "talk" who (that?) said that everything
that I typed on her screen appeared like
t
h
i
s
Her login id is poppins. Does anyone know what went wrong?

poppins was using what we like to call a "dumb" terminal (this doesn't
imply that the user is "dumb" or that the terminal is really dumb, but
like all things that we don't have the patience to teach and educate,
we call it "dumb" because we like categories and like to stick things
into them) and can't do full-screen things like "talk" and "pico"
(sucks when your editor default is pico, but that's another issue),
so instead of looking like an intelligent stream of letters, you get the
cascade effecct described above.

i usually find that if they are ntalking me, they just don't know how
to use write or chat, so i tell them to. usually works! :)

Ja, ntalk interacts with the modifications to Grex's kernel that prevent
non-members from using outbound Internet services. The result is that
ntalk generally doesn't work for non-members. It's on staff's list of
things that need attention, but it's well lower in priority than fixing
router problems and the thing where the disk loses files.

Disk losing files? That sounds firmilliar (I suck at spelling) to me!
I have lost numerous files, and I dont' know where they went.
Thank god they weren't very important!!!
Ok, it's nice to hear that I'm not the *ONLY* one with problems with
        ntelk! =)
And it's nice to know thta it will get fixed in the future. (hopefully)

The disk's zapping of file is fairly similar to a lottery. Several
board/staff people have gotten things blown up on them, and I believe
it was Rane who had his mail directory start to vaporize before his
eyes as that inode went bad(!).
