Two question.
Questions, rather. one, how do you create a new noise file like they have
on the channel "harvard"? ANd two, why can't i join the staff .cf? What deep
dark secrets are you discussing there? answers would be appreciated.

1.) I don't know, somebody else will have to answer that question.
2.) You can't join the staff conference becuase you arn't a member of
staff. We dicuss issues related to the physical hardware, maintainence,
keeping the system running day to day. We also discuss security related
issues: Who has tried to break into the system, who has succeeded, how
they did it, what we are doing/have done to close that hole, Things we
have heard about that someone may potentially use to try to break in and
what we need to do to stop it. The security related issues are why it's a
    closed conference.

If security related issues are the only reason to keep it closed, can't
you just create a closed staff_security conference, with the rest open?

But then we'd have this other closed conference. Most of the staff
conference is devoted things like that; there are several "what I did"
items that keep staff in touch with each other, so multiple roots won't
stumble into each others work. Sometimes that deals with sensitive
things. The other parts are boring. Several items were started in
staff but moved into coop because they didn't need to be staff-only.

To answer question 1 in response 0: Send me e-mail telling me the
name of the channel and what parameters you want on it. (Type
"!menumore /usr/spool/party/chantab" to see the current list of channels
and their options, and type "!man party" for more information about
what the options do.)

Is it possible for an individual user to add a noise to party, Valerie?

...I don't think so. Has to be done by a party adm. type.

Yup, if you want a noise added, send me e-mail about it.

And Popcorn will make it so, post-haste! She's always been very
cooperative with me regarding these things, and I'll bet that, so long as
the noise isn't obviously harmful, she'll have no problems putting it there..
You'll want to word it like so:
        0$ - this is the noise-user's login. I.E.; 0$ sneezes <for sneeze>
1$ - this is used when you want to put other info in the noise, like
0$ smiles at 1$, for the /smile noise.
2$, 3$, etc.. this is for more variables, put elsewhere in the noise.
These make a noise difficult to use, and are best avoided, for convenience
sake.
<sidhe is done putting words in popcorn's mouth, now>

        That noise would be:
0$ is done putting words in 1$'s mouth, now

Oh, and give her the title, like knowitall, for the above one.
Then, after she puts it in, when you type /knowitall popcorn in party, the
abve noise would appear.

i assume that if i made a channel, i'd be that channels party adm?
also, can i stop the channel from showing up when you use !pwho when
nobody's on the channel. Not actually for secrecy, just so i don't clutter
the display...

how do i create a noises file of my very own to use in the channel of my
very own?

Actually, users can't make permanent channels on their own. To create a
permanent channel, send me mail requesting it and listing the options
you want on the channel. You wouldn't really be the channel's party adm,
(a root needs to do that stuff) but you would be able to change the noise
list for the channe. There's no way to stop a channel from showing up
in the "pwho" list. To create your own noises file, look at the file
/usr/spool/party/noisetab, which contains all eight hundred something
noises from the main party channels. You could either copy that to your
own noisetab file, or set up a new noisetab file with noises in it in
the same format. The noises need to be in alphabetical order, and when the
same noise is listed more than once (with different numbers of arguments),
you need to put the one with the most arguments first. Type "!man party"
to see the party manual page; it explains this stuff.
