Both of my kids have gone to Chelsea Pediatric Center since they were born.
I know it's not in Ann Arbor, but I consider it worth the short drive.
Dr. Westhoff is on staff at both St. Joe's and U of M, and the co-founder
of the clinic is also on U of M's staff. They're very friendly, really
competent, and they definitely don't overmedicate. Usually they'll offer
suggestions that don't involve any kind of drugs as a first option. They
also have someone on call all the time, which is comforting to new mothers
If you want to talk to them, they do make appts. specifically for
expectant mothers (at least they did for me). Good luck on the search!

8 years ago I was referred to Jane Young (Carrol, Elkins & Young, at the
time). My kid was 2 months premie and we had the _best_ care and relationship
with both Dr's Young & Elkins (only saw Carrol once before she retired). they
were very friendly, informative and took the time to discuss all aspects, even
if seemingly unrelated.

A couple of years later Jane left the practice to do full-time hospital
practice (and have more time with her own young kids) and the practice took
on two other female docs. I've met them both and they seem to be quite
competent, however, my kid (and I) prefer Dr. Elkins. Perhaps it's because
on our history that he still takes time with me (his practice has since merged
with one of those 'conglomerates') but if Ian isn't feeling well he has no
hesitation to say "I want to go see Dr. Elkins" (even knowing it could mean
a shot, heh).

They are on staff at both UofM and St. Joes, and are covered 24hrs by a
pediatric nurse via phone as well as the Pediatric Urgent Care at St. Joes
(which operates almost as an extension office for the docs who participate).
In the past 8 years Ian has been to urgent care at both UofM and St. Joes,
including the regular St. Joes ER (when pediatric urgent care was not open)
and _by far_ I recommend the Pediatric Urgent Care (St Joe)! Not only are
they seemingly the most friendly and accomodating, including the on-call docs,
but they use techniques which help to minimize emotional trauma on the kids
(I could go into how the regular ER used Demerol injections to ease the pain
of a fracture, but the pediatric ER used a mild sedative to relax my kid and
which has the addition effect of being an "amnesiac" so he didn't really
remember the trauma involved with the treatment...he still talks about those
damn Demerol injections...3 years later!).

Elkins office is in the Tower Professional Bldg, on Plymouth Rd, just west
of Green.

(ps- if you need more input let me know by mail...one of my friends is a
pediatrician at the U, and her husband is a pediatric orthopedist at Harper
in Detroit. I'm sure I could get some other referrals if I had specific needs
to ask about.)

(My wife went to Dr. Elkins as a child and so did our kids. It was sad to
see her go, but she deserved it. We also really liked Dr. Young when she
came on but our kids started seeing a "big people Dr." when she left.)

Klaus, it was not Dr. Elkins that I went to as a kid and that our kids went
to: it was Dr. Carroll. She died a year or so ago, she was the "cookie
doctor."

We chose a GP, so he would know the health-patterns of the whole family and
be able to recognize stuff that was consistent with it, treat all of us if
necessary. Dr. Sheerer, at the Parkway Center, is also a homeopath, and his
kids were born at home so he was backup to our midwife. I find that he
listens well, is laid back, takes the time you need, etc. He's not as into
alternatives as Dr. Linkner, in the same building, but he listens better
than Dr. Chernin, also in the same building. They are all MDs who use
homeopathy as well. I'm not sure if his practice is still taking new
patients. The number is 971-7070. (Mom's generally have the doctor's number
memorized...<g>)

When we lived in AA our phone number was the same as Dr. Carroll's with "2"
instead of "3". We got a fair number of late-night phone calls ...
Usually people realized something was wrong when they got a sleepy "hello"
instead of whatever the normal greeting was.

(Grace eventually looked up the correct number to tell them.)

Valerie, feel free to mention that you heard about Dr. Elkins from me. It
may not matter, but we usually insist on seeing him as opposed to his (very
competent) associates.

When I was a kid, our pediatrician was Dr Brougher (I believe that's
spelled correctly--it rhymes with 'soccer'), and us kids liked him a
lot. Now that my sister (a year older than I) has kids, she also takes
them to Dr B, and, as a parent, reccomends him unreservedly.

Yes, Dr. B is in Ann Arbor (when I was a tyke, he had an office near
Stadium and Industrial; I don't know if he's still at that particular
spot).

My sister likes him primarily 'cuz 1)He's good with the kids (and again,
I remember liking him when I was a patient. I don't recall ever feeling
scared or talked down to) 2)He takes time to explain things as
necessary, and he's up on the latest info (my sister jokes that he knows
*too* much).
