Blinds are always an option, although they can be expensive as well.
You can also go to the fabric store, buy some pattern you like, and hang it
over the curtain rods.

try Kiwanis, any Saturday. It is a little known fact that you can shop their
every Saturday, even if there's not a "Kiwanis Sale" going on.

We got pretty nice (plain) drapes from the Kiwanis sale. I'd second that as
a source.

Non-custom blinds are quite inexpensive. They mount over the
window casing but look just fine.
Draperies and curtains are too much housekeeping work. I don't
"do" them. ;-)

But then, if you are concerned about dust allergy & that sort of thing,
curtains can be cleaned more easily than blinds -- I knew someone once who
regularly put draperies through a non-heating dryer cycle just to get the
dust out. (As for me, I don't wash my curtains often, but it's more often
than I dust my blinds)
But as to the original point, I have seen curtains at yard sales often
so I wouldn't be surprised to find them at large equivalents like a flea
market (haven't been to Kiwanis since before 1990 & can't remember
distinctly since I wasn't shopping for curtains then, but it's a good bet).

Also, try Pier One for non-curtain inexpensive window dressing.

We've been moving from curtains to (non-custom) mini-blinds. Even have a
couple of sets of shutters on some windows.
We might have one or two sets of older curtains you can have...if you're
interested. Let me know.

[I haven't been around much lately, as you can see...but give me a call and
you can take a look. If I remember right, they are sort of an open-weave of
coarse (thick) yarn/thread and one set (at least) is lined. They are pretty
neutral colors (earth tones) and one set has some blue in them. Anyway, it
costs nothing to look and you just might save them from either some future
garage sale or a dumpster (depends on how fast my wife wants to get rid of
them, heh).]
but for _you_...such a deal ;-)
