My scarey serrated stagehand knife has a peg thru the blade so you can open
it easily. I don't recall seeing any "swiss army" type knives with that
feature.

Sounds like you want a switchblade! :)

Try Wilkinson's Luggage on Main Street in Ann Arbor. They have a
wide selection of Swiss Army knives; you can try them out and see
if you can find one that works for you.

Take a look at the Leatherman (?) multi-purpose tool. It is a pair of
folding pliers with tools like the Swiss Army Knife has, in the
handles. I carry this because of the pliers, though it doesn't have
the pipe reamer for my - nonexistent - pipe (it ws really handy over
the holidays when I put a fishhook into my palm...with the pliers
I could force the hook on through, which I could not have done with a
Swiss Army Knife).

Well, I'm holding out until I find a pocket gizmo that has
a folding chest-spreader and #15 scalpel blade for those
ackward situations where conventional CPR just doesn't cut
it and you must crack the chest. ;-)

We bought one with those features at Harry's on Liberty St. It was a gift
for our daughter and I do not recall any difficulty in opening it. It was
around the $25-30 range.

I received a Victorinox "Tinker" model about 8 years ago (as a gift),
and have been very happy with it. It has a Phillips screwdriver in
place of the more traditional corkscrew. I also recently purchased a
Leatherman mini which, like Rane, I carry because of the pliers. It
hasn't replaced my Swiss army knife, however. I haven't found this knife
to be difficult to open, but it may have limbered up some in the last
several years ;) The Leatherman I find to be much more difficult to
open than the knife, btw.

I used to have a Victorinox "Swiss Champ," the one that has just about
everything and costs around $100. It even had pliers. I lost it and haven't
been able to justify spendign that kind of money on another one, but I really
miss it at times. Once I recover from buying the truck, I should probably
go replace it.

I bought a Gerber "multi-tool" at Kmart for something like $30-36. It's got
the best pliers of any of the multi-tools, and of course the usual screwdriver
and knife blades.

Re #5 I prefer a toilet plunger for those awkward CPR situations...

re 11:
Is that the same Gerber that makes baby food?

They make hunting knives; don't know if they are the same as the baby food
company.

(It's a pretty obvious tie-in, though. ;) )

Yes, you really need something versatile, to open those jars.
