You might try Dragon's Lair Futons in Kerrytown, they have some nice stuff.
You probably don't want to buy chairs at Property Dep, they tend to have stuff
too old and gross for dorm lounges.

You don't like the bare wall look? :)

Any good, squishy, truly comfortable new armchair will be in the
hundreds of dollars. High hundreds, actually. I'd instead consider
buying a previously softened (used) archair and then picking out the
perfect new slipcover in a funky print. Slipcovers are very much in
vogue at the moment so the selection is pretty good.

I'm still happy with the couch and matching chair we got at Apt Furnature
Rental on Washtenaw over 4 years ago. I don't remember how much we paid.
I went in there expecting to get used stuff that had been previously rented
when I saw the sign in the window saying that they also sold furnature. But
we found some new stuff that was on sale and I felt like it was a really
good deal.

And don't forget the library for wall decorations. Change your paintings
every few weeks.

Visit the Detroit Institute of Art, for prints. Even better, visit the
Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I have some old Ansel Adams Calendars if you like his Black and White
pictures. I also have a nice sailing poster size photo stored somewhere.
Let me know if you are interested in these.

White. I don't care what color the walls of my house are, so long as they
are white.

Build your own four-poster bed. Be creative with the headboard / shelf,
footboard and whatever you toss over the tops of the posts to create a
nice private, comfy space.

I'm looking for an armchair too, as well as a couch. I think I'll check
Treasure Mart, since they've had some nice things when I've been there not
looking for anything. I'm not sure how their prices on that sort of thing
are, I'm sure they will be cheaper than new.

There was a store called "garage sale galerie" which had used furniture. It
moved from Jackson Road to a location in Ann Arbor, but I am not sure where.
They had lots of stuff and rapid turn-over.

Treasure Mart is pretty good; really nice pieces have higher prices, but you
can often find something workable at a decent price. Especially if you find
something ugly and want to re-cover it yourself.

Isn't the unfinished furniture a pretty good deal (I think there is a shop
across from Arborland).

For inexpensive but funky new stuff I'd check out Pier One.

If you are thinking of stacking cartons, you may want to get some chimney
flues and put boards across the top. Two different types are available and
both would work fine. The flue liner is a square or rectangular shaped
ceramic tube and these would work fine. Length may be a problem, though.

Also, they have concrete blocks of various size with a round center hole for
a flue. I have seen these spray painted and supporting boards making very
neat looking tables/stands.

Stacked bricks/blocks also would do the same thing.

Futon stores tend to have interesting tables, too.

I use an antique comode as a nightstand. Check out Treasure Mart, and
the next antique fair. Some are pricey - some not.
