Tangent

Sounds like DC is doing a "Heroes Reborn" thing with a new line called
Tangent. "Tangent is a project I conceived and brought to DC that features
a new take on some mfamiliar DC names with a new twist," said creator Dan
Jurgens. Along with Jurgen, Todd DeZago, James Robinson, Karl Kesel, Chuck
Dixon, Kurt Busiek, John Ostrander and Ron Marz are attached to the project.
Jurgens reports that none of these takes will adhere to previous material.

Why? Because sales on the Heroes Reborn (no matter how bad they are) were
really high. The keyword is "Money".

Here's the plan, this Tangent thing won't last a year like it predecessor,
but only a week. DC is publishing nine one-shot comics on the first week of
October. What is Tangent? Tangent is a separate universe where the Cuban
Missile Crisis became a war. 30 years after an atomic exchange, there is a
risen number of superpowered beings. Creator Dan Jurgens provided a 30 page
"bible" with detailed descriptions and history to each of the writers. The
books may have a similar names to the regular DC characters, but the
similarities end there. 1) The Atom (by Jurgens) was the first hero in the
Tangent Universe with powers similar to Solar (which was another book Jurgens
worked on).
2) Doom Patrol (by Jurgen, Sean Chen, and Kevin Conrad) is basicly the same
idea as the old one.
3)The Flash (by Todd, Dezago, Gary Frank, and Cam Smith) is a woman who is
sentient light.
4)Green Lantern (by James Robinson, J.H.. Williams, Mick Grey) is actual
lantern when place on a grave bring back the dead who suffered great injustice
(very much like the crow).
5) The Joker (by Karl Kesel, Matt Haley, and Tom Simmons) is a female
counter-culture leader.
6) Metal Men (by Ron Marz, Mike McKone, Mark McKenna) is an elite army team
in 1969.
7) Nightwing (by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema) is a top secret government
that gets down and dirty.
8) Sea Devils (by Kurt Busiek, Vince Giaranno, and Tom Palmer) are a bunch
mutated sea creatures.
9) Secret Six (by Chuck Dixon and Tom Grummett) is basicly the Tangent's JLA.

While your at it, pick up them issues of Astro City, Busiek's true love child.
All his other writing is crap compaired to Astro City (okay maybe I'm making
a bold statemnet here... this is only my opinion).

(a resounding "UGH!" on the comparison of the Tangent line to Heroes
Reborn! what's the similarity?)
(_The Atom_ was an OK story by my standards. the character is of the
Superman archetype as far as powers go. he's the grandson of the
original Atom, who was a WWII hero. it reads as if it's an outgrowth of
where Jurgens was going with _Solar_ before the Valiant reboot. it's an
"everything you've ever known is a lie"-type story; not new, but not
bad. typical Jurgens art; I forget the inker.)
(_Doom Patrol_ was my least favorite of the Tangent stories. some of the
aspects of Chen's art, I find distracting, and the story wasn't very
involving. basically, it's an "go back in time to prevent disaster and
end up causing it in the first place"-type story. I'd try to explain
the characters, but they were unmemorable.)
(_The Flash_ had its moments. I think of it as, to paraphrase Sarah
Dyer, a "girl-friendly book." she's the daughter of a superheroine who
keeps pushing her into the spotlight, and a oafish father who keeps
trying to kill her and fails miserably. there was definitely a teeny-bop
flavor to the character [WAY moreso than the current Robin or Superboy],
but not enough to be annoying.)
(_Green Lantern_ was easily my favorite. to discount it as Crow-like is
to miss out on a well-written story. the Green Lantern's mission, if you
will, is to bring back to life people who have unfinished business. the
book contains the story of three of those people, told in an
anthology style with Green Lantern serving as narrator. if you're
looking for a cheap way to sample the Tangent Universe [and you missed
the promo comic that was sent out to comic shops], I would start with
this book.)
(_The Joker_ was VERY cool and very well done! she's [!] very much a
prankster, with a great sense of comedic timing. yet it's not all fun
and games; it becomes quickly clear that this manic heroine was borne
from tragedy. Haley's and Simmons' art was what I liked about Dark
Horse's _Ghost_, and it's just as good here.)
(I'll try to cover three of the other four titles later; I missed
picking up a copy of _Nightwing_. suffice to say, I really liked the
Tangent stories, and am looking forward to reading more.)

Why bother to do more Tangent stories? They'll bomb as badly as the second
series of Amalgam titles. Do they need an excuse to do more of these things
after The Kingdom?

Dan Jurgens is currently finishing a 12-issue miniseries called Tangent:
Superman's Reign. I believe the 'Tangent' books are included as one of the
52 worlds of DC's revived Multiverse. The Wildstorm superheroes inhabit
another.
