I was sad when Jimmy Stewart died...he was one of my favorite actors.
I got to meet him once, at a D.C. area bookstore where he was signing
books of his poetry. I was in line near his table, when his handlers
suddenly told him he had to leave, that he has been there for the
agreed upon time and needed to go across town to CNN to do an
interview. There was still a long line of people there.

"Now doggone it, these people have been standing in line here for a
long time, you just tell CNN they can wait"

(naturally Stewart got huge ovation from me and everyone else in line.
So I got to shake his hand, and get his autograph. Quite a thrill!)

There is another Star passed away recently: Mitchum.
I remember her movie about WWII "Winds of War".

The character played by Robert Young in "Father Knows Best" was
named Jim Anderson. Young didn't always play good whitebread type
guys -- catch his performance as a Nazi in some 1940's movie whose
name escapes me at the moment. A very effective sniveling villain.

Time was up for Buffalo Bob Smith today. Dead of cancer
at age 80. Howdy Dowdy lives on forever, even without his voice.
Another broadcasting pioneer gone away.

First Roy Rogers dies, then Buffalo Bob. Two pieces of my childhood gone.

Once again, death came in groups of three, at least regarding TV stars with
children as their primary audience.

Even more ironic is the fact that "The Shari Lewis Show" took over the
Saturday morning time slot that had just been vacated by (are you ready for
this?) "Howdy Doody" -- hosted by the late "Buffalo Bob" Smith.

Coincidence? You decide.

Roddy McDowell died today. Child star or the late 40's and early 50's, starred
in "Lassie Come Home" as a child. He'll probably be best remembered for his
role in the Planet of the Apes series of films.

And don't forget Gene Autry, who died Friday 10/2/98 at age 91.
