American Cars Not Sold in the United States. Mark Unseen   May 25 11:30 UTC 1995

This item is to discuss cars with traditionally American nameplates that are
not sold in the United States. This would include the Meteor, which was a
Ford or Mercury sold in Canada with different grille, taillights, and other
trim. Another possibility would be the DeSoto Diplomat, which was a
Plymouth clone sold overseas in the 1950's or thereabouts. Any other
ideas on this. Also, would we count all the Ford products sold in Europe
in this section?

My Father's first new car was a 1962 Mercury Meteor. He had it 12 years
and was really reluctant to take it to the junkyard in 1974. We actually
had 2 of them in the late 60's. He bought another one used.

It most certainly was NOT a "sold only in Canada" model.

RE #1: Yes, gregc, Mercury did have a Meteor model in the United States,
from 1961 to 1963. However, the Meteor that I had mentioned (sold in
Canada but not in the U.S.) was really a disguised Ford (1948-61) or
Mercury Monterey (1964-78). They were sold as a low-priced alternative
to the standard Mercury models. The 1962 and 1963 Canadian Meteors were
the U.S. Mercury Meteor. Did I make myself clear on that point?

Yes, that was better. Your original post didn't make any of that clear.

BTW: Ford also sold a car called the Monarch from 1948 to 1961 (except
1958, when the Edsel filled that spot), which was a Mercury lookalike.
They also had a car in 1960 only called the Frontenac (Ford Falcon)
and a Mercury truck.

Doggone! I was going to mention the Mercury Truck. It was a F-1 model
renamed as M-1 under the Mercury Nameplate. Tailgate said "MERC".

While the Ford Falcon was pretty common in the US, there are some models of
it that were, as far as I know, only sold in Australia. These include the
Falcon XA, Falcon XB, and Falcon XB GT. You've seen '72 and '74 models of
these vehicles if you've ever seen the movie _Mad Max_; the yellow police
Interceptors are XB and XB GT models, with spoilers added, and the yellow
Pursuit car is an XA. Max's black car is a modified XB GT, as well.

BTW, the Ford Falcon is still being built and sold in Australia. Recently,
this car has been redesigned. Ford also markets the Festiva, the Laser, the
Mondeo, the Fairmont, the Fairlane, and the LTD down under.
