Anne McCaffrey's PERN Mark Unseen   Sep 23 20:06 UTC 1995

Okay, this item is to discuss the world of Anne McCaffrey's Pern, opening with
a continuation of a discusssionion begun in the Children's Books item,
recapped here:

#23 of 27: by Big Snauf (lilmo) on Tue, Sep 19, 1995 (22:14):
The Harper Hall trilogy is a good intro for older kids to the world of Anne
 McCaffrey's Pern.

#24 of 27: by Anne Perry (anne) on Thu, Sep 21, 1995 (11:31):
I agree- I really liked those books, I think I was in seventh grade
when I read them for the first time (I read them over and over again...)
For me it kinda showed me that if I tried hard enough, and wanted
something enough- with a little luck it could happen... I mean it
happened to Menolly... (That's not the only place I got that idea
from, but it did help to re-inforce the notion at a time when I was
just entering the teen years and wasn't feeling very confident...)

#25 of 27: by Big Snauf (lilmo) on Fri, Sep 22, 1995 (13:24):
Did she hook up with Sebell in that trilogy, or later?

#26 of 27: by Anne Perry (anne) on Fri, Sep 22, 1995 (17:40):
Ummm... I think she hooked up with him in _The White Dragon_ which
comes before the third book in the trilogy- which is about Piemur..
no... wait, they 'hook up' on the boat as they are going to Southern
to look for Piemur (or some other reason...) Kimi went into heat...
and well... I believe Rocky caught her... and well... the rest just
 kind took it's course...

#27 of 27: by Big Snauf (lilmo) on Sat, Sep 23, 1995 (16:00):
Yes, that's the incident I was referring to... when was that? (i.e., what
book?) I remember being mildly amused at Sebell's initial confusion.

Actually, as I recall, the immediate source of his confusion was why Menolly
was sending away her other gold. That part is why I wouldn't recommend this
book for younger children. It is definitely for adolescents and up.

I agree with that... The first two are, for the most part, fine,
I would recommend the third for middle school and up...

Have you read "Dolphins of Pern", (or something like that)? The last one I

Re #12,13: They would be at her reading level (I think), but as anne said,
some of the subject material is a bit mature for anyone below mid-teens (imho)

The artwork on the covers of the Ballantine editions of "dragonsong" and
"dragonsinger" were what got me interested in reading McCaffrey
but the first McCaffrey I read was Dragonflight.

You have MichaelWhelan to thank for those covers. He has done some EXCELLENT
artwork. I especially like his Elric pictures and his Sepultura covers.
