Here's the Scoop from the Columbia Cable planning commision yesterday:

The 8 new channels to be added around the middle of September are:

1) Sci-Fi
2) Learning Channel
3) Sports Channel America
4) Comedy Central (yay!)
5) VH-1
6) Cartoon Network
7) Travel Channel
8) Country Music TV

Also, apart from 2, 4, and 7, almost all the existing channels will be
moved to other places on the "dial".

While I was surprised that the Travel Channel made this list and something
like E! and/or Court TV didn't, I am overjoyed that my top three choices
made the list (Sci-Fi, Cartoon, and Comedy Central).

(and I'm linking this to Arts...)

We have Comedy Central now on Continental Cablevision. I'm enjoying
their coverage of the Republican convention ("inDecision '92").
The host is Al Franken, and they have the likes of Calvin Trillin
and Penn Jillett (sp?) on the convention floor and Roy Blount on
remote hookups. My favorite line so far is from Penn: "Barbara
Bush is right underneath us and as soon as she starts to walk out
to the stage I'll try to shout one question down to her...or maybe
I'll just hang a lunger on her."

I voted for SciFi and the Cartoon Network. Good to see that my vote
counted. >8)

A vote ALWAYS counts in a fair election, regardless of the final outcome.

Yes, but when you've been voting Libertarian as long as I have, it
surprises you to see the ones you vote for win. >8)

Do you know *anyone* who voted for the Travel Channel? What were their
reasons?

I was kind of curious about E!, sorry not to get a chance to see
a real, live, People magazine type of channel. Glad to get VH1 at
last, though.

I'm one of those"schmoes" (but not in your office Valerie) who voted for the
travel channel and since you asked, I'll tell you why. I travel alot and I
love to travel. I am always interested in 1) finding new places to travel
to, and 2) seeing places I've already been. I must admit, that so far I've
been disappointed in the quality of the programing but perhaps a few well
phrased letters to the cable company will work towards improving quality.

Writing to the Cable company won't do anything. You would need to write
to the head of programming at the Travel Channel. CC *might* have that
address, but I would be overly suprised if they took the time to
forward your letter.

Thanks for the suggestion. Its always better to "do" then to complain.

Two new channels are supposedly coming in January.
Univision the all spanish channel.
and the international news channel, with stories in the native languages.

I was thrilled to discover that the Cartoon Channel carries
"Top Cat," 11 A.M. weekday mornings. I used to LOVE this show.

Comedy Central has been showing the 1980-81 season of Saturday
Night Live at 5 PM weekdays. Amazingly bad stuff! I never thought
anyone would see these again (this was the famous first season
after the original cast left, when the producer was Jean
Doumanian, who made some very bad decisions). The only
cast members who returned after that year were Eddie Murphy
and Joe Piscopo. It's fun watching the disaster.

I remember when I stopped watching that season when it was first run.
I was all of twelve years old, not terribly discriminating, and I still
knew truly bad TV when I saw it.

Still, I do enjoy the story of Charles Rocket's last words on the
show. >8)

They've moved on to the '81-82 season now, when Jean Doumanian had
been replaced by Dick Ebersol as producer. That season had some
good moments, but the episode I saw was not full of them. I still
miss Mary Gross sometimes, though.

The cable company is going to put in the channel history so around the middle
of september the history channel will start I think. How much more will it
cost?

Ok, let's breathe a little life into a dead item.

I think they almost have it right. Except I would like another movie channel
like TCM, Turner Classic Movies. I have called and called and called and
called and lobbied and lobbied and called, and still MediaOne says they have
no plans at this time to add more channels. I can do without some of the
channels they have now, but would it kill MediaOne to add one more channel?

I wish MediaOne would carry M2 so I could actually watch some music videos
on MTV.
