The Academy Awards Grex Vote Mark Unseen   Feb 18 13:49 UTC 1995

Last week the nominations for this year's Academy Awards were announced.
There were few surprises and it was, for the most part, a mellow year for
Hollywood. So to spice up the event Grex will hold its own vote - we'll
get to see how our opinions compare to the experts.

Sometime within the next couple of weeks Voteradm will fire-up the vote
program for those interested in supporting their favorite nominations.
Everyone's vote will count - member, non-member, pseudo, lurker... All are
welcome to participate. So below I'll list the categories and nominees.
Then get out and see those last few movies you missed and think about your
choices.

The Academy Awards will be televised on March 27th. Our voting will
end sometime on the evening of the 26th.

Forrest Gump is getting like, 7 or 8 nominations. The only other movie to
do that was Gone With the Wind.

And I still haven't seen it.
I vote for Pulp Fiction on everything.

Voteadm has to write a front end to the vote program to enable it to
handle several votes at once, but it's not a huge task. I expect I'll
have it in place sometime this coming weekend.

re#1: Forrest Gump got 13 nominations, which equals All About Eve.
As for Best Picture, I'd be happy to see either Gump or Pulp Fiction win, but
given the average age of academy voters, I think it's more likely to be
Forrest Gump.

How come Samuel L> Jackson is considered a supporting actor in Pulp Fiction and
not a lead actor? I'm new to this system so you may have already covered this
territory.

Remmers, That would be cool if you could get the vote program to do this. We
could have our own grex grammys

re #15: He only appeared in two (three, maybe?) of the four short
stories. His character was decidedly equal in importance to
John Travolta's character, but Travolta's character was in
all of the short stories, which made it more of a lead role
than Jackson's. Jackson also probably has a better shot at
winning a supporting actor award. I remember seeing him in
"Loaded Weapon" and not thinking that much of him, but after
seeing him in "Pulp Fiction" and "Fresh" (the film he *should*
have been nominated for), I've come to appreciate his range of
        acting ability.

re #17: I thought about what you said about John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, I
guess Isaw the movie as group pice. Not one person more important than
another. I liked "Fresh" but I like Sam Jackson in most of evrything he has
done recently.

response 19 of 26: Mark Unseen   Feb 27 01:43 UTC 1995

has Samuel Jackson been in anything else recently? I'm aware of "Pulp
Fiction" and "Fresh", but nothing else.

He was also in "Jurassic Park," and "Patriot Games," to name a few. (In
"Jurassic Park," he was the guy who went out to the power shed, and later on
his severed arm fell on Laura Dern.)
