Indian restaurants in Ann Arbor?
|
Mar 11 14:27 UTC 2000 |
I've never tried Indian food, but I'd like to. Can anyone recommend a good
Indian restaurant in Ann Arbor? I know there are several, but I don't have
any way to know if they're good or not. I'm looking for something that
will be tasty and hopefully not too expensive. If anyone can say anything
about a few of the local places, I'd appreciate it.

I really don't like Shehan Shah. Raja Rani is just okay but way
expensive. I like Shalimar, on Main Street, near Liberty. I
expect we'll be eating there within the next few days as my
son is in town and Indian is his favorite cuisine.

I've always been disappointed with Raja Rani's level of service. Their
food was reasonably good, but it's difficult to appreciate when you can't get
someone to take your order and provide a plate.

I regularly eat at Shalimar. I think it is the best we have in Ann
Arbor.
It will never compare to any good indian restaurant in the UK (where
local aficionados will claim the food is better than in India, but I
won't coment because I have never been to India to compare). I have
enjoyed Indian food in the UK, have to admit it is the best I have ever
tasted.
Nevertheless, you should try Shalimar on Main Street. I suspect you will
not be disappointed.

Actually, my favorite Indian restaurant in town is the little one on 5th
Ave called the Earthen Jar. The woman who runs it is gracious and a
lovely person to talk to, and they produce truly scrumptious vegetarian
cuisine. And at something like $3.00 per pound, you can sure eat a lot
of food for cheap.

Someone else recommended that place to me, too. It looks like it's got
pretty minimal seating. I need to check it out.

I'll kick this with a mention that Shalimar is moving/has moved to
a new location on Washington; their Main Street space is shuttered.

My understanding is that the move to Washington is temporary while they expand
their Main Street space --- they're adding the space that was most (but not
very) recently the Lucky Drugs store. They'll move back to Main when
construction is done.
