Ann Arbor Ice Cube is chosen as site for National Junior Hockey Team Mark Unseen   Jul 20 15:09 UTC 1996

USA Hockey, the country's governing body for amateur hockey, has chosen the
Ann Arbor Ice Cube (A^2 Ice^3) as the new home for its elite development
program. The deal is not yet done, USA Hockey and the Cube are still
negotiating some details, but it was written up in the AA News that both sides
want to make it work.

"Elite development program" means the national junior team and 16- and 17-year
old select teams, as well as summer camps for players in the 15-19 age range.

The National Junior team would train here for the World Junior Championships,
Dec 26, 1996 - Jan 5, 1997.

USA Hockey also oversees the US National and US Olympic teams, and women's
National, Olympic, and Junior teams, but none of these would train at the cube.

I take it you are a hockey fan, eh? Just what is your financial interest in
all this, srw? :-) Just kidding, I hope you know. It is fun to see a TMR so
excited outside the Boston area. !

Yeah, I am a hockey fan, and I think it is great for the area to have a
program like this happen here. When my two boys were playing hockey in the
AAAHA, there was never enough rink time. I'm glad that there is now, even
though I don't get to benefit from it directly.

I have no connection to the Ice Cube, but I believe it is locally owned.

My wife buys a lot of "ice" at the Cube - but for figure skating, not hockey.
The figure skaters expect to lose some ice because of the new NJHT.

There was a huge shortage of ice time in AA before they built those 3 rinks.
Things are clearly more relaxed now. This will tighten up ice time, I'm sure,
but it should never go back to what it was like last year.

Yeah. My son gets a good deal of ice time with the AAFSC. So far, I haven't
heard of any loss of thier time at the cube.

I also heard a rumor (from as far away as California) that the Cube is to
become the training site for the Olympic skaters. Anyone know details of
that?

U-of-M's Blue/White game will be held at the "cube". I forget the date

Someone just mentioned the Cube to me the other day; I wasn't familiar with
it before she mentioned it, since it was built after I moved away...
Apparently, Huron and Pioneer plays hockey there now [instead of at Vet's
Arena, where I think they played before].

Does the Cube have other fun facilities besides the ice rink? I'm curious
on how it comparies with a complex they built not too far from me when I lived
in Durham. They had an ice rink, swimming pool, and gyms, too, if I remember
right.

The Cube has three rinks, a gear store, limited food, skate rentals, and
not much else - except for an MFit gym.

I saw a hockey game at the Cube over the weekend; it's a pretty cool place
[no pun intended]. :-)
